Overview
UNITAR is an autonomous body within the United Nations that was established in 1965 pursuant to a UN General Assembly resolution. UNITAR’s mission is to develop the individual, institutional and organizational capacities of countries and other United Nations stakeholders through high quality learning solutions and related knowledge products and services to enhance decision-making and to support country-level action for overcoming global challenges.
UNITAR’s Green Development and Climate Change Programme Unit (GDCCPU) develops the capacities of individuals and training institutions in developing countries to implement the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and to advance green and climate resilient development. It offers a range of services, including executive training, institutional capacity development, support for national learning strategies, learning methodology development, and knowledge-sharing. Activities are carried out through partnerships with other UN organizations, bilateral development partners, as well as leading learning institutions and think tanks. The Programme also hosts the Secretariat for UN CC:Learn, the One UN Climate Change Learning Partnership (www.uncclearn.org ) and is a member of the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) (www.un-page.org ).
General objectives of the contract
The consultant will support the development and creation of the pilot episode for the 'Pirates of the Silent Seas' animated series, working with a dedicated team of experts in climate change, audiovisual communication, and education. While the consultant will have considerable independence in animation tasks, they will benefit from the guidance of our team. This role provides a unique opportunity to understand the UN framework and contribute to impactful educational content aimed at inspiring young audiences globally (and not only).
Responsibilities/description of professional services
- Support the development and creation of the pilot episode for the 'Pirates of the Silent Seas' animated series, based on the draft storyboard.
- Review and further develop the existing draft storyboard to ensure it meets project standards.
- Collaborate with climate change, audiovisual communication, and education experts to ensure accurate and impactful content.
- Refine and animate characters and scenes, bringing the storyboard to life.
- Provide input on visual storytelling techniques to enhance the educational aspects of the series.
- Work independently on animation tasks while maintaining regular communication with the project team.
- Incorporate feedback from the team to refine and improve the pilot episode.
- Participate in meetings and discussions related to project planning and progress updates.
- Contribute to the development of promotional materials for the pilot episode.
- Gain insights into the UN framework and its approach to climate change education.
- Support other tasks related to the 'Pirates of the Silent Seas' project as needed.
Performance Indicators for evaluation of results
- Ensure that the animation produced is of high quality and visually appealing.
- Deliver outputs according to agreed-upon timelines.
- Capability to integrate environmental themes and educational messages into the animated content effectively.
- Demonstrated competence in teamwork and collaboration with experts in climate change, audiovisual communication, and education.
Reporting structure
The Consultant will report to Manager, Green Development and Climate Change Programme Unit.
Day to day Contact: Training Associate
Education and Skills Required:
- A first-level university degree or diploma in animation, or a related field.
- Understanding of animation principles and techniques, with a focus on storytelling and visual communication.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and thrive in a deadline-driven environment.
- Technical experience in animation software, including Adobe After Effects, Animate/Character Animator, Vyond, Unity, and Blender or similar.
- Experience with sound design and video editing software such as Adobe Suite and Da Vinci Resolve.
Experience:
- A minimum of 1 year of experience in animation, video production, or a related field.
Language:
- Fluency in English is required.
- Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset, but not a requirement.

The assignment will be home-based. The Consultant will be therefore required to use his/her own computer and required software.
Consultants are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local laws. UNITAR does not reimburse Consultants for any taxes, duty, or other contribution payable by the Consultant on payments made under the consultancy contract.
The Institute does not provide or arrange life or health insurance coverage for Consultant, and Consultant are not eligible to participate in the life and health insurance schemes provided by the UN for its staff members.
