Genetics Counselor-ONC Outpatient Care Clinic SCD

The cancer genetics counselor is a full-time position with specialized education. The counselor's primary focus is to provide family history assessment and cancer genetic counseling for patients/families with cancer and/or at risk for cancer. Patients/families are referred for a broad spectrum of cancer genetic syndromes including gastrointestinal, breast/ovarian, melanoma, and renal cell carcinoma, as well as other rare cancer genetic conditions. Clinical time is devoted to the outpatient Cancer Risk and Prevention Clinic at Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute in Scarborough. The cancer genetics counselor collaborates with the oncologist.
Specific responsibilities of the cancer genetics counselor include:
- Family history analyses and pedigree maintenance
- Data coordination
- Chart organization
- Writing/dictation of consultation and summary letters to patients
- Patient question follow-up
- Informed consent process
- Follow-up with lab orders
- Insurance pre-approvals
- Insurance appeals
- Physician contact and follow-up
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
- Education: Master's degree from an accredited Genetics Counseling training program.
- License/Certifications: Candidates may be certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics.
- Experience: Experience in cancer genetics counseling preferred.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a variety of personnel (e.g., patients, employees, physicians, and other health care professionals).
- Computer skills proficiency.
- Public speaking.
