Role Definition:
Provide consulting to all Caterpillar business units including both prime product and aftermarket focused groups for development of global or regional competitive analyses. The role is responsible for Corporate Strategic planning processes allowing business units to measurably advance their competitive positions leveraging analytical tools, expertise, external perspective, consulting assistance and project team leadership.
What you will do:
- Responsible for intelligence and insights regarding all categories that contribute to Caterpillar’s $28B by 2026 aftermarket parts and services goal. This includes not only “traditional” aftermarket parts categories such as undercarriage, engine, GET, drivetrain, hydraulics & electrical, fluids/filters, and more, but also those categories of technology often represented by the “ACE” acronym (Autonomy, Connectivity, Electrification). The role is unique in that it will directly support all three Caterpillar verticals (Construction Industries, Resource Industries, and Energy and Transportation).
- Define and execute processes for internal and external investigations and analysis of company and competitors’ positions including distribution strategies and channels with special emphasis placed on financial results benchmarking and identification of threats and opportunities.
- Develop and maintain a global intelligence network for expediting the flow of strategic and operational competitive information which will be used to work with aftermarket focused leaders on a regular basis to:
- Provide regular insights and trends for industry structure, market segments, growth rates, customer criteria, product and service differentiation, competitor cost drivers, companies’ strengths and weaknesses.
- Guide in the assessment of global and regional competitive position in order to support their strategies and operational, product designs, sourcing, pricing, distribution and promotion decisions.
- Identify implications and strategic options to improve competitiveness including gaining/maintaining industry leadership and profitability.
- Deliver concise "early warning" updates of strategic competitive activities and actionable insights, along with implications to the executive office.
- Complete quarterly deliverables including competitive pulse newsletters on key companies in each aftermarket category, create and deliver a quarterly business review for the SD&D leadership team, and support quarterly deliverables for the ESD pricing and investor relations teams.
- Address ad-hoc requests amongst ongoing work including research requests such as deep dive benchmarking studies from internal customers up to and including the Executive Office and Board of Directors. Lead multi-functional project teams through competitive analysis/strategic positioning, diagnostic analysis and solution definition.
What you will bring:
- Degree in Engineering, Business, Accounting or similar from an accredited college or university. Preferably complemented by an MBA or equivalent.
- 6+ years of extensive experience in one or more operational areas related to the aftermarket focus of this role.
- Highly analytical and persistent with the ability to develop unorthodox hypothesis, drawing insight from diverse sources and broad/ambiguous data sets.
- High level capability regarding financial analysis of industry players with the ability to compare and draw insights over time, and in comparison to Caterpillar.
- Previous experience with competitive/market assessments is highly valued.
- Must be an excellent multi-tasker and extremely efficient gathering and interpreting information while working on tight timelines. Must be able to identify and prioritize the most urgent needs and apply focus and attention accordingly.
- Strong desire to continually upgrade your knowledge base and improve skills proactively.
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with an extensive network of business contacts both internal to the company, and external within the industry.
- Ability to travel to trade shows and other industry events and leverage the information and contacts to support key internal customers.
- Must have the ability to command respect of managers of all levels including senior leadership and properly communicate using exceptional oral and presentation skills.
