The Research Technician I-II performs laboratory work that supports various scientific investigators. This position supports the Hematopoietic Cell Procurement and Processing Lab within the Co-Operative Center for Excellence in Hematology. Duties include bench-level experiments using cell selection devices, operating and understanding flow cytometry, and compiling and verifying accuracy of data. Knowledge of Excel and Access is a must.
Responsibilities
Works independently under the guidance of the senior technician in the lab, and in conjunction with the Principal Investigator, accomplishing the goals of the laboratory.
- Independently run immunomagnetic bead cell selection experiments.
- Keep and maintain accurate records for various research repositories and cell banks.
- Maintain and operate a flow cytometer.
- Maintain a cell type database.
- Work with various cryopreservation techniques.
- Have ability/capability to work with samples stored in a liquid nitrogen environment.
- Prepare cell shipments to various research institutions.
- Maintain laboratory inventory and supplies.
For candidates hired at the Research Technician II level, perform the duties of the Research Technician I plus:
- Cross train as back-up donor coordinator, requiring some administrative tasks.
- Identify methodological problems in research protocol and implement modifications to optimize experimental results.
- Prepare written progress reports concerning studies including assembly, organization, and interpretation of data.
- Be responsible for the performance of individual research projects.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Research Technician I:
- Bachelor's degree in related scientific field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated scientific knowledge in the area of study.
- Demonstrated basic laboratory skills.
Research Technician II:
- Bachelor's degree in related scientific field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 2 years of experience working in a lab outside of school coursework.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Research Technician I:
- Proficiency and experience in cell cryopreservation, tissue culture, flow cytometry, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, and cell purification techniques using autoMACS(r), CliniMACS(r), or comparable instruments preferred.
- Self-motivated candidates with excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication skills.
Research Technician II:
- Proficiency and experience in cell cryopreservation, tissue culture, flow cytometry, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, and cell purification techniques using autoMACS(r), CliniMACS(r), or comparable instruments preferred.
- Self-motivated candidates with excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication skills.

The hourly pay range for a Research Technician I position is from $22.21 to 31.61 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
The hourly pay range for a Research Technician II position is from $25.71 to $36.60 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
