General Description:
Under general direction performs complex professional technical and analytical work in a Blood Bank/Transfusion Services department. Serves as subject matter expert on blood banking and transfusion medicine.
Essential Responsibilities:

- Has primary responsibility for a major function within their section.
- Oversees the activities of personnel in the section related to the function managed. In addition, performs all testing within the section as needed. Conducts team huddles and in-services.
- Sets up new methodologies, develops procedural protocols, writes procedures and trains laboratory personnel.
- Participates in performance improvement activities and supports the laboratory in meeting all regulatory accreditation standards.
- Recognizes problems, and initiates troubleshooting steps to evaluate testing failures and other problems, if necessary. Notifies the supervisor and/or manager, and contacts manufacturer for additional assistance or field service support, if required.
- Reports to supervisor or manager for the section.
- Assists department supervisor by providing technical direction to staff members. Provide feedback to supervisor on individual and/or team learning progress.
General Responsibilities:
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduate of MT/MLS/CLS program OR Graduate of MLT program with 4 years of experience in Blood Bank/Transfusion Services.
Experience: 2 years’ experience in a clinical laboratory. Primary responsibility in blood bank required. MLT with four years experience in blood banking may be substituted.
License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: National certification by a recognized organization (ASCP or AMT or equivalent) MLT, MT, MLS, CLS, BB, SBB.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of medical technology, theory, practices, techniques and procedures.
- Skill in performing laboratory testing.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures.
- Ability to work under stress and function in emergency situations.
- Good communication skills, computer knowledge, and the ability to work with others as a team to ensure quality patient care.
- Demonstrates a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
- Maintains professional growth and development through continuing education activities.
