The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Nursing is seeking a Staff Nurse (RN) for the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) to assess patients' nursing care needs, evaluate effectiveness of care provided, and integrate nursing theory and research into clinical practice.
The CSU is a short-stay unit with a maximum capacity of 12, providing care for medically stable adult psychiatric patients. Members of the interdisciplinary treatment team are prepared to manage patients who are experiencing a psychiatric crisis and in need of immediate, around-the-clock care and observation. The unit’s open concept features a large central room with comfortable reclining chairs, rather than traditional hospital beds. Spaces for individual therapy are located immediately adjacent to the central living space. The unit provides other homelike touches, including TVs, music, and web access.
Percent of Time: 50 - 100%
Schedule example: 50%-100% positions available. 20-40 hours per week dependent upon percentage of position. Rotating D/E/N shifts and rotating days off. 8 and/or 12-hour shifts available. Weekend and holiday rotating assignments required. Orientation will be at 100% schedule/40 hours per week. Orientation duration may vary.
Location: Regular salaried position located in Iowa City, Iowa
Salary: $60,000 minimum at 100% effort to commensurate *This does not include differentials. Salary will vary based on years of experience and percent of effort.*
Pay Differentials: Shift differentials for evening, night, and weekend shifts. Premium pay for additional shifts greater than 4 hours. Inpatient differential of up to $5,000 per year.

Education Required:
- An Associate’s Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
- License to practice nursing in the state of Iowa required by date of hire.
Experience Requirements:
- Minimum of six months adult inpatient nursing experience or recent internship on an adult inpatient unit.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Proven capacity to function with a high degree of autonomy while actively collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Successful history in building/facilitating interpersonal relationships involving patients, families, colleagues, and student-learners.
- General proficiency with computers.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Previous nursing experience working with behavioral health patient population.
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Masters Degree in Nursing is highly desired.
- If Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is not yet obtained, active enrollment in a BSN program is desirable.
- Experience utilizing electronic medical records.
- Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
