JOB PURPOSE OR MISSION: Responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of the assigned nursing unit(s). Makes decisions, within guidelines, that could seriously affect the division, department and/or GHS System's financial and performance objectives and strategic results. Monitors the budget for area. Direct reports include supervisors, and staff employees including responsibility for performance reviews, hiring, disciplinary actions and terminations. Performs job for the age population served as defined in the department's scope of service.
PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include, but are not limited to:
1. Ensures that objectives of the departments are administered.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
• Ensures that established priorities for departments are carried out on a daily basis.
• Ensures that goals and objectives of the departments are consistent with the BRGMC's philosophy.
• Ensures that departmental measures for processes and expectations are carried out on a daily basis.
• Uses alternative methods of providing services to reduce department-operating costs.
• Coordinates staffing needs of the departments with regards to market/seasonal changes.
2. Maintains an organized department to ensure efficiency, accuracy of work, and information flow.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
• Monitors department operations and recommends changes as needed.
• Ensures the efficient operation of the department.
• Utilizes available staff to maximize the effectiveness of the work performed.
• Reviews the compilation and analysis of department data as necessary.
3. Demonstrates effectiveness in managing the activities of the department.

• Ensures staff members adhere to policies and procedures necessary to achieve department objectives.
• Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with management and other departments.

5. Ensures that quality, patient focused care is provided.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
• Facilitates collaborative, interdisciplinary approach to planning care and evaluating outcomes, as evidenced by charting records and team feedback.
• Oversees department operations to ensure care delivery processes that make the patient the central focus and meet core standards, policies and procedures.
• Develops and monitors systems to assure patient/family teaching occurs and meets educational needs.
• Designs and maintains measures for continuous improvement of department.
6. Maintains staffing levels appropriate for patient census and acuity.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
• Monitors and updates staffing plan as required by fluctuations in patient census.
• Effectively utilizes available staff to meet established standards based on census and acuity need on a 24-hour basis.
• Applies management theory and leadership skills to effectively manage employee performance and ensure accountability for individual and department performance.
• Follows disciplinary process to correct employee performance by developing action plan for improvement and defining time lines for change.
7. Implements strategies for resolving patient care problems with other members of the health care team.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
• Effectively takes initiative and manages problem-solving situations.
• Responds to critical situations involving patient, staff and/or visitors and implements viable solutions.
• Demonstrates ability to prioritize and structure effective and timely solutions.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Prior management experience preferred.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.
Unit-specific training courses completed within 6 months in position.
National certification in area of expertise strongly preferred.
SPECIAL SKILL, LICENSE AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
Current Louisiana Nursing License.
Ability to supervise and train staff, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work.
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures.
Knowledge of related accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.
Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

HIPAA REQUIREMENTS:
Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Medical records without limitation both paper and electronic, employee health records, patient demographics, lab and radiology results, patient information related to surgery or appointment schedules, medical records related to quality data, patient financial information, patient billing 3rd party, patient related complaints, information related to patient location, religious beliefs, employee prescriptions, and/or investigatory.
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices appropriate to Job Position including but not limited to: Incident reporting, handling of wastes, sharps and linen, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, patient identification, administers medications/blood products, receives orders for patients, validates patients for any procedure/surgery, transports, monitors or observes patients for procedures including infusion pumps, monitors clinical alarms, and collects blood samples.
