Overview
The VAMC in Memphis, Tennessee is recruiting for Two Physician Assistants to serve Full Time for the Pulmonary Critical Care Sleep Service. The position is accountable to the Chief of Pulmonology, for assuring the most effective delivery of state-of-the-art care by meeting or exceeding compliance standards.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Provide patient care in Pulmonary/Sleep sections, in collaboration with Pulmonary & Sleep physicians.
- Assist in the performance of procedures in the Pulmonary inpatient & outpatient service.
- Discuss with patients the results of biopsies obtained during Pulmonary procedures (bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, pleural biopsy, etc.), chest x-rays, CT scans, PET scans, other imaging, PFTs, and other tests, including blood work ordered from Pulmonary and Sleep clinics and sleep studies.
- Review, route & complete routine consultations.
- Refill Pulmonary/sleep medications for patients.
- Review in-patient and outpatient consults and discuss findings with either the Pulmonary/Sleep attending or Pulmonary/Sleep Fellows.
- In conjunction with collaborating consulting physicians, perform complete evaluations, develop treatment plans, implement therapeutic interventions, and provide appropriate follow-up care to inpatients & outpatients.
- Assist in follow-up of discharged patients from ICU or Acute care in Pulmonary & Sleep Clinics as required.
- Provide education and counseling to patient/family in the areas of health promotion, maintenance, and disease prevention.
- Assist in the performance & interpretation of PFTs, cardiopulmonary exercise tests, 6-minute walk tests, and other tests performed in the Pulmonary & Sleep Sections.
- Providers are expected to show effectiveness in teaching, monitor and coordinate educational activities, including precepting for PA students from VA-affiliated institutions.
- Researchers will show an ability to identify and define significant research and development problems, plan and execute a precise research program, and generate effective reports and results worthy of publication.
- The PA is responsible for maintaining current clinical privileges and keeping licensure, BLS/ACLS, and all other appropriate documents and training requirements up to date.
- This provider, as well as all employees within the Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Service, is expected to work with the staff in actively evaluating and addressing patient and clinical needs in the inpatient & outpatient settings. This provider will be expected to evaluate clinical performance and formulate and implement plans to improve the care delivered to our patient population.
- The provider will perform administrative duties as directed by the collaborating physician or designee.
- Complete all required encounter information in CPRS in a timely manner.
- Continue to be a lifelong learner to ensure keeping up with changing and improving evidence-based care and standards of care.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Pulmonary or Sleep Service or designee.
Job Requirements
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Physician Assistant Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Education: Graduate of a training program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of PA (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations. Additionally, candidates must meet one of the following:
(1) Master's degree in any discipline;
OR
(2) Bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a PA.
- Certification: Must have successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE). NOTE: Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is no longer required for employment in VHA.
- Licensure: PAs must possess an active, current, full, and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. PAs must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active and current licensure in that State.

- English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
