Lead Histotechnician/Histotechnologist:
The Histology Technician will perform various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. This may include accessioning, specimen gross dissection, embedding, microtomy, H&E, special stains and IHC staining procedures.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Processes dermatopathology specimens to include tissue fixation, processing, microtomy and staining slides for microscopic examination.
- Prepares solutions, stains, and reagents in accordance with standard written procedures.
- Operates and maintains all histology area lab equipment in proper state of readiness, cleanliness.
- Performs and monitors inventory of supplies, equipment, and reagents used.
- Puts away supplies.
- Has experience performing all routine and special procedures and immunoperoxidase (IHC) stains.
- Shows willingness to assist other laboratory personnel when requested.
- Encourages other lab personnel towards professional growth and development by sharing information.
- Keeps current with changes in laboratory procedures.
- Organizes work for effective utilization of time.
- Able to determine priorities when organizing daily assignments.
- Disposes of hazardous chemical wastes per regulatory guidelines.
- Maintains strictest confidentiality.
- Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, policies, and procedural manuals.
- Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations.
- Shows ability to handle unexpected situations and is able to exercise independent thought and action.
- Observes confidentiality, both with patient information and co-workers.

Qualifications and Required Skills/Abilities:
- Certified Histotechnician (HT)/Histotechnologist (HTL) (ASCP).
Education and Experience:
- At least 5-6 years of histology lab experience, preferably in Dermatopathology laboratory setting.
- Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological science from an accredited institution OR Associate degree in a chemical, physical, biological science from an accredited institution.
- Individual must meet requirements for performing high complexity testing as defined by federal licensing guidelines (CLIA) and accreditation agencies (TJC,CAP).
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Finger dexterity required.
- Hand coordination required.
- Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust or focus.
Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional laboratory environment. This role routinely uses standard histology equipment.
Reporting Structure:
Reports to Laboratory Manager.
