SUMMARY
Provides professional nursing care to patients undergoing surgery. Prepares and maintains operating room for all surgical procedures. Establishes and utilizes a checklist to monitor the physical plan of the operating room and equipment for conformity to all national standards for ensuring safety for the patient and all personnel. Assembles the type and quantity of material and special equipment needed for daily procedures and possible emergencies. Circulates for surgical procedures. Responds to surgical emergency requirements such as cardiac, pulmonary, or respiratory failure and hemorrhage. Provides care based upon the assessed needs of the patient in relation to the proposed procedure.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain open communication lines, both intra-departmentally and interdepartmentally, to provide for total needs of the patient. Conduct preoperative and postoperative visits. Discuss operative procedures with patients and informs them of what to expect during surgery. Consult with the operating surgeon and establish priorities of care for each patient entering the operating suite.
- Direct and instruct personnel in preparing, sterilizing, and caring for operating room equipment and supplies. Supervises central sterile supply service activities. Maintain concise and complete records and reports. Coordinate an ongoing, in-service education program to continually update knowledge and skills of all assigned operating room nursing personnel.
- Accurate and complete documentation of patient care events and process improvement activities IAW MTF guidelines.
- Administer medications, electrolytes, fluids, blood, and blood products.
- Ensure compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment facility. Provide care within ethical and legal boundaries.
- Recognizes medical emergencies and responds appropriately. Initiate CPR if required. Assist surgical team in administering advanced cardiac life support measures when necessary.
- Provide perioperative nursing care, for all types of patients admitted to the surgical suite for surgical intervention.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for all patients including newborns, children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly; disabled to include visually and hearing impaired; and individuals of varying ethnic and religious backgrounds.
- Participation and compliance with quality and process improvement activities and events to ensure compliance with national standards and guidelines.
- Adhere to perioperative, infection control and safety policies and procedures.
- Coordinate patient care through a continuum and facilitates the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to care, quality and cost effectiveness.
- Participate in the orientation, training, and evaluation of duty performance of newly assigned personnel, as appropriate.
- Serve and participate in committees, functions and other meetings as directed.
- Check procedure set up for accuracy and perform routine cleaning and organization of work area.
- Ensure a safe work environment, employee safe work habits and patient safety IAW regulatory agencies, infection control policies, and process improvement initiatives.
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Formal Education: Registered nurse shall have successfully completed a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from a National League of Nursing (NLN) or from an American Academy College of Nursing accredited college.
- Registered nurses shall hold a national or state nursing license that is valid and current with no limitations, stipulations or pending adverse actions.
- Registered Nurses shall have a current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- Experience: A minimum of 12 months of experience is mandatory in operating room assignments.
- Must obtain and maintain the site's required health screening and immunization requirements.
- Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- Will be oriented/trained on the use of all equipment available for patient care.
- Knowledge of a variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment.
- Must be able to read, understand, speak, and write English well enough to effectively communicate.
- Excellent patient assessment skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people.
TRAVEL
All Market contractors are subject to working at a duty location at any of the MTFs or associated sub clinics within the Colorado Military Health System (CMHS).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Position consists of sitting for long periods of time, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, speaking, or translating.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily indoors at a well-lit military treatment facility. The environment is normally air conditioned, but conditions may change dependent upon circumstances.
WORK SCHEDULE
Full-time. Shifts may include 12-hour, 10-hour, 8-hour, nights, weekend, on-call, or overtime.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS PACKAGE
- Pay is: $42.50 to $47.07 per hour.
