POSITION SUMMARY
The Louisville, KY-based Senior Operations Manager is a key Zoetis Reference Laboratories extended leadership team member. The Senior Operations Manager uses their reference lab management and people management skills to lead our flagship diagnostic lab based in Louisville, KY. They work with the local supervisory team to recruit, onboard, and develop incoming employees. Lead critical initiatives that will enable Operational Excellence, efficiency improvements, and meticulous financial management. Evaluate, interpret, and recommend key laboratory metrics; present and deliver to key stakeholders. Directs operations of both technical & non-technical activities in the lab.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in developing and recruiting qualified candidates and staff. In conjunction with the Human Resources and Laboratory Admin Director, coordinate departmental interviews, hires, disciplines, and discharges and participate in the supervisory evaluation.
- Act as a liaison between cross-functional business groups to support task organization from project award to delivery, addressing any identified gaps that may impact scheduled study deliverables.
- Responsible for driving lean projects across facilities that improve operations and business processes.
- Own developing and deploying existing methodologies while advancing and applying lean principles.
- Lead critical initiatives that will enable Operational Excellence, efficiency improvements, and meticulous financial management.
- Evaluate, interpret, and recommend key laboratory metrics; present and deliver to key stakeholders.
- Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible leadership experience in clinical laboratory management, preferably with large areas of responsibility.
- Give input into developing the budget and maintaining it throughout the year.
- Direct daily technical and non-technical operations.
- Maintain, develop, and monitor budgets, expenses, variances, and strategic planning for the laboratory.
- Develop, support, and actively seek activities and establish an environment that promotes recognition and retention of colleagues.
- Interpret and apply department and organizational policies consistently and fairly in managing a qualified, efficient, and productive workforce.
- Adaptability to performing under stress when confronted with an emergency, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations, or situations in which working speed and sustained attention are make-or-break aspects of the job.

- Learn new techniques, equipment functions, policies, and procedures quickly and effectively as they are revised, devised, and added to the department.
- Must demonstrate effective communication skills with staff, clients, and senior Zoetis leadership. Must be able to communicate information and certain patient problems and concerns.
- Act as a champion for Quality and Patient Safety. Foster a culture of continuous improvement.
- Ensure that all colleagues at the location have access to ZRL-controlled documents relevant to their roles and that approved policies and SOPs are being followed at the location.
- Ensure that colleagues report issues and interact with the Quality Improvement Ticket (QIT) system and Quality Team per ZRL policy and create accountability for prompt resolution of issues.
- Ensure the laboratory location conforms to ZRL Quality Checklists. Complete annual quality self-assessments and resolve findings in a timely manner. Participate in annual Quality Assessments with the ZRL Quality Team.
- Participate in monthly location-specific quality “Local Lab Review” meetings. Attend monthly Quality Council meetings.
- Counsels and disciplines colleagues as needed to achieve productivity goals.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Preferred Education: A.A.S Medical Laboratory Technician, A.A.S. Veterinary Technology, B.S. Medical Technologist/Medical Lab Scientist, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates carrying certification or eligibility for certification are preferred – MLT, MT, CLS, MLS (ASCP/AMT); RVT, CVT, LVT.
Experience: Must have 3+ years managing a laboratory.
Successful candidates must be detail-oriented, organized, and dependable.
