Job Description:
Pathology Support Specialists are the key support personnel for pathologists and the Pathology department. Responsibilities include operating multiple laboratory and pathology computer systems, pathology case registration, accessioning pathology cases, and/or transcribing pathology reports, preparing cases and reports for tumor conferences, basic office administrative tasks, and frequent communication with physicians and pathologists for specialty testing and add-on requests.
Responsibilities include filing, pulling, and tracking pathology slides, blocks, and materials, preparing cases and reports for tumor conferences, and frequent communication with physicians and pathologists for specialty testing and add-on requests. These caregivers may also facilitate the ordering and processing of pathology-specific specialty testing requests – including molecular and cytogenetic studies and the subsequent result distribution and report addenda. Duties may also include operating multiple laboratory and pathology computer systems, pathology case registration, accessioning pathology cases, and/or transcribing pathology reports.
These individuals are often the primary contact for Intermountain clients, serving as a liaison between the Intermountain Pathology Services team and various system entities, and managing incoming calls, as appropriate. They understand medical terminology and can confidently communicate with pathologists, clinicians, and other medical support personnel.
Caregivers in this position have excellent communication skills and the ability to deescalate stressful situations calmly and respectfully in a professional manner. These caregivers are involved in troubleshooting of day-to-day issues within the Pathology department, are detail-oriented, and can recognize factors that may affect testing outcomes. They take appropriate action to solve problems and document errors.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED
- Excellent communication skills including ability to communicate in English (oral and written)
- Effective customer service skills
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment under stressful situations
- Demonstrated ability to work on-call shifts, according to department needs
- Self-motivated and able to work independently
- Basic computer skills
- Flexibility to work a variety of shifts that may include weekends, holidays and nights
- Knowledge of medical terminology
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a healthcare setting
- Medical transcription or coding experience
- Experience with laboratory information systems
- Adheres to all personal protective requirements including, but not limited to, gloves, lab coats, face shields, and masks
Physical Requirements:
- Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, documents, monitors, identify equipment and supplies, and be able to assess customer needs.
- Frequent interactions with providers, colleagues, customers, patients/clients and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.
- Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate supplies and equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use for typing, accessing needed information, etc.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience: $18.38 - $26.65
