Required License/Registration/Certification:
Graduate from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) accredited program of surgical technology, or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with at least 10 years in a Surgical Technician role, or certified as a surgical technologist or certified as a surgical technologist first assistant by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or graduate of a military training program (validated with a DD214 or graduation certificate), or UKHC employee who is already in a Surgical Technician role as of 09/17/2016.
Physical Requirements:
The essential functions include the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull 50-100 pounds on a daily basis; as well as stand, walk, and sit for long periods of time. The conditions of work may involve exposure to communicable diseases, the hazards of radiation, and injury from intractable patients or sharp instruments.
Shift:
Open Monday through Friday 7-3:30 with weekday and weekend call responsibilities, including holidays.
Job Summary:
The primary responsibilities for this position include: passing surgical instruments in the operating room, maintaining a strict sterile field, assisting/performing surgical case counts, obtaining necessary supplies/instruments for such cases and checking for completeness and working order, opening the room independently or in conjunction with the circulating nurse (depending on case complexity), setting up and maintaining the sterile field until the patient exits the room, maintaining a neat and orderly sterile field during each case, passing instruments to surgeons while anticipating their needs, monitoring for breaks in sterile technique and taking corrective action when identified, and performing counts in accordance with policy.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities:
Ability to scrub a variety of surgical cases.
Does this position have supervisory responsibilities? No.
Preferred Education/Experience:
Graduate of school of surgical technology or one year of directly related Operating Room experience as a surgical technician.
