JOB SUMMARY:
The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides comprehensive outpatient psychiatric care to patients including assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and medication management. This role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high quality in-person and telehealth patient centered care.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES:
Patient Assessment and Treatment:
- Conduct psychiatric evaluations and assessments to formulate accurate diagnoses.
- Develop, monitor, and update individualized treatment plans, incorporating evidence-based practices and patient preferences.
- Prescribe, manage, and discontinue psychotropic medications as appropriate, continually monitoring efficacy and side effects.
- Provide psychotherapy and counseling interventions, as appropriate.
- Order, interpret, and follow-up on laboratory or diagnostic tests as needed for patient treatment plans.
Collaboration and Consultation:
- Collaborate with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals within the FQHC to coordinate care.
- Consult with primary care providers and specialists regarding psychiatric issues impacting overall health.
Patient Education and Support:
- Educate and engage patients and families about psychiatric disorders, treatment options, and medication management.
- Offer support, counseling, and psychoeducation to promote self-management and recovery.
Crisis Intervention and Management:
- Assess and intervene in psychiatric emergencies, including suicidal ideation, aggressive behavior, and acute psychosis.
- Coordinate with emergency services and psychiatric facilities for appropriate crisis interventions and referrals.
- Be available to PHC providers (both during and after hours) and other staff to aid in crisis intervention for all PHC patients/clients.
Documentation and Compliance:
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient assessments, treatment plans, and interventions.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including HIPAA and state-specific regulations.
Education and Training:
- Provide education and training to clinical staff, other colleagues, and other healthcare professionals on psychiatric assessment and management.
Quality Improvement and Research:
Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the FQHC to enhance psychiatric care delivery.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Master's or Doctoral degree in psychiatric nursing from an accredited program.
- Current unrestricted licensure as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in Louisiana.
- Board certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner by a national board.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in the Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner role.
- Ability to work with an adult and geriatric population.

- Comprehensive understanding of psychiatric disorders and treatment modalities across the lifespan.
- Proficiency in psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and medication management.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport with patients and collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team in a dynamic clinical environment.
- Commitment to ethical and culturally sensitive psychiatric practice.
- No suspension/exclusion/debarment from participation in federal health care programs (e.g. Medicare, Medicaid).

- Complete all necessary EHR documentation and superbills in a timely manner in accordance with PHC policies.
- Ensure that company policies and state, federal, and HIPAA regulations are followed.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSURES:
- Current unrestricted licensure as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in Louisiana with prescriptive authority.
- Board certification as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
- Current DEA license.
- Current Louisiana CDS license.
- Registration in the state Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP).
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend written documents fluently.
- Spanish language skills preferred.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations for medication dosing and titration.
REASONING ABILITY:
- Ability to assess complex psychiatric presentations and develop appropriate treatment plans.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- This position is office based and will provide in-person and telehealth options for patients.
- This job operates in a healthcare setting. This position requires frequent standing and walking.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Most of the time is spent in a normal office environment.
