Summary of Job Responsibilities:
The Southcentral Foundation (SCF) Health Information Specialist position is responsible for a variety of tasks in health information management such as processing electronic and paper health information for the release of information; data analysis to ensure completeness of records for billing; chart completion; transcription; preparation for peer review audits; retrieval, prepping, scanning, and indexing of paper documentation; and management of new and existing paper forms.
Responsibilities also include statistical reporting to the State agency in Alaska’s Automated Information Management System (AKAIMS) and/or interpretation of the Behavioral Service Division-Electronic Health Record (BSD-EHR) for quality assurance and compliance with Privacy Act, HIPAA, and CARF within various information systems.
The role provides peer technical support and resolutions to end users and development and testing for enhancements within the BSD-EHR. It also includes providing orientation of the BSD-EHR to newly hired BSD employees and retraining of BSD providers and/or BSD clinical support on system changes to a variety of BSD-EHR systems.
This position has two (2) levels designed to provide progressively more responsible and independent work experiences. Progression between job levels is based on the demonstrated ability to successfully handle more progressively responsible assignments.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two (2) years of health information education or experience in a job that works in health records, or two (2) years of Electronic Health Care Information Technology experience, or a combination of education and experience.
- Must meet the following conditions to qualify as an approved SCF driver:
- Valid Alaska driver’s license that meets State of Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) license requirements.
- No more than three (3) moving traffic violations OR two (2) at-fault traffic accidents in the previous three (3) years.
- The driver must not have had ‘Driving Under the Influence’ (DUI) OR ‘Driving While Intoxicated’ (DWI) OR ‘Operating Under the Influence’ (OUI) violations as follows:
- Zero (0) violations in the past five (5) years.
- No more than two (2) violations in the past ten (10) years.
- Drivers must be at least 18 years of age. Drivers 18 through 20 years of age may only transport equipment, materials, and employees. Drivers who transport customers must be 21 years of age or older and must have completed the probationary period of license requirements for Alaska.
- Prior to hiring date, must provide current copy no more than 60 days old of driving record from issuing State.
- Additional Qualifications for Health Information Specialist II: Meets all requirements of Health Information Specialist I in addition to the following:
- Three (3) years of health information education; OR equivalent combination of education and experience; OR demonstrated proficiency as a Health Information Specialist I; OR certification in one (1) of the following AHIMA Accredited certification programs:
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- Certified Health Data Analyst (CHDA)
- Certified Documentation Improvement (CDIP)
