Endoscopy Technician - Endoscopy* 24hrs/wk

General Summary:
Assists the physician in endoscopy procedures, handling and processing of endoscopy procedural equipment and turnover of the procedure room(s). Communicates and collaborates with care team members via Universal Protocol to develop, implement, and evaluate the plan of care to meet individualized and developmental care outcomes. Utilizes information to continuously improve patient care and practice to enhance outcomes.
Requirements:
- High School diploma or GED
- Valid BCLS Certificate of Completion required within 30 days of hire (preferred at time of hire)
- Minimum of one year of procedural experience or sterile processing/decontamination experience in an endoscopy center or applicable healthcare setting.
- Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor certification required within two years from date of hire/transfer into this position, with full time equivalent staff strongly preferred to have within one year of hire/transfer into this position.
- Experience in interventional procedures preferred.
- Experience in decontamination/sterile prep preferred.
- Basic typing and computer skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- PREPARATION
- Selects and prepares appropriate supplies and equipment for the procedure based on knowledge, the information from the preference card and the physicians’ plan of care.
- Check case supplies for completeness.
- Notifies Clinical Coordinator and/or Specialty Services Manager of any supply or instrument unavailable.
- If unfamiliar with the procedure, seeks educational opportunities and confers with Proceduralist and other departmental staff.
- INFECTION CONTROL
- Assures instruments and sets are clean, highly disinfected and/or sterile for procedures.
- Have clear understanding of and ability to apply principles of asepsis and patient safety.
- Set up procedural field including appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for team.
- Utilize appropriate infection control technique for any necessary draping of the field.
- PROCEDURE PERFORMANCE
- Assist in the delivery of direct patient care under direction of the Registered Nurse, Proceduralist, and/or designated lead.
- Observes procedure closely and anticipates the need of the team.
- Anticipates and recognizes special problems as they arise.
- Assist the RN in opening supplies.
- Maintain organized and efficient procedure field.
- Maintain proper storage of supplies, instruments and equipment.
- Handle and manage procedural accessory equipment, including control of the “handle end” of endoscopic biopsy forceps, polyp snares, endoscopic clips, and retrieval nets/graspers.
- PATIENT CARE/SAFETY
- Provide direct and indirect patient care using the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient requirements as directed by the physician; use medical equipment in accordance with standards; demonstrate continued competence in all facets of endoscopy procedures.
- Take vital signs, measure patient weights, obtains any ordered POCTs and document these in the EMR.
- Participate in the Universal Protocol/Timeout process.
- Properly positions patients pre- and intra-procedure.
- Follow specimen collection and handoff procedures. Verify specimen is labeled and handled correctly.
- Handle and dispose of sharps according to policy.
- DECONTAMINATION/STERILE PROCESSING
- Handle and care for instruments as indicated by the manufacture and hospital policy.
- Maintains working status of instruments and equipment; ascertains that broken and/or missing instruments are properly repaired or replaced; notifies Clinical Coordinator if loaner equipment is needed.
- Clean and sterilize all instruments in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Clean and maintain all cleaning, disinfectant and sterilizing equipment.
- Monitor biological and document results. Assure sterility/high disinfection of all instruments notifying Clinical Coordinator and/or Specialty Services Manager.
- ORGANIZATIONAL STANDARDS
- Participate in committees and educational opportunities.
- Observe cost containment practices.
- MISCELLANEOUS
- Assist in cleaning and restocking cabinets, carts and storage areas.
- Make beds, clean rooms/bays, serve as runners for equipment for procedure, prep, and recovery.
- Transports patients via wheelchair or stretcher.
- Dispose of trash, hazardous waste, and linen.
- Unpack and put away all supplies.
- Assist in supply inventory and ordering processes.
- Observes cost containment practices.
- Address and respond to issues and concerns in a timely manner; will notify Clinical Coordinator of any physician or patient complaints.
- Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
