General Summary of Position
Assists the Pharmacist in preparing and distributing medications to patients. Performs designated technical functions to facilitate pharmacy operations.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Consistently fulfills all the responsibilities of the Pharmacy Technician II.
- Under the supervision of the licensed Pharmacist, prepares oral, topical, and all parenteral medications for dispensing to patients, including the selection, labeling, and packaging of appropriate pharmaceuticals using appropriate IV equipment, and filling of medication carts.
- Enters physician orders into the hospital computer system to update/edit patient profiles and charges.
- Assists patients, nurses, physicians, and others with medication order requests and pharmacy-related needs.
- Monitors stock inventory levels and medication expiration dates for pharmacy areas and replenishes medications as needed. Conducts monthly/periodic inspections of patient care/department areas.
- Fills and replaces medications in the automated medication dispensing machines and transports to appropriate nursing unit(s).
- Prepares IV admixtures using aseptic techniques, including STATS, parenteral nutrition bags, and cytotoxic agents.
- Delivers and retrieves medications, including narcotics, and pharmacy supplies to/from patient care and satellite pharmacy areas.
- Compounds products in bulk, or per individual order, and prepares private stock orders and individual unit-of-use packaging, when not otherwise available.
- Completes and maintains controlled substance inventory log/records. Reviews patient medicine administration record (Kardex). Compares dosage with pharmacy records; notes discrepancies; and informs Pharmacist for follow-up.
- Effectively performs all pharmacy technician duties in all pharmacy locations including the OR pharmacy.
- May assist the Senior Pharmacy Technician in orienting new Pharmacy Technicians and Pharmacy Technician students.
- Maintains clean and orderly workstations.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Up to 2 years of technical or other specialized IV/Chemo training may also be required.
Experience
- 3 years of hospital experience required.
- A diploma from an approved pharmacy technician training program may be an acceptable alternative for six months of experience.
Licenses and Certifications
- DC DOH - Pharmacy Technician Registration required.
- PTCB - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or equivalent national certification within 180 Days required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Requires ability to read and write, knowledge of grammar, medical terminology, and proficiency in basic mathematics, including fractions and decimals, and keyboard skills.
- May require the use of standard office/medical equipment (i.e., typewriter, personal computer, data terminal, on-line printer, calculator, telephone, facsimile, copier, and sterilizing equipment); the preparation, comparison or checking of reports, records and related data; and basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application.
This position has a hiring range of $21.83 - $33.49.
