Job Description
The Perioperative Registered Nurse is part of an excellent team that encompasses all three phases of surgery (the pre-, intra-, and post-operative stages) and provides, manages, teaches, and studies the care of patients undergoing surgery or other procedures.
Essential Duties:
- Establishes an environment of safety for the surgical patient.
- Assesses, diagnoses, implements, and evaluates treatments and procedures that contribute to the physiological stability for the surgical patient.
- Demonstrates knowledge regarding the psychologic, sociologic, and spiritual responses of patients and their families to the operative or other procedure, including participation of patients in their recovery.
- Supports patient rights and ethics by delivering consistent, competent, and ethical care within legal standards of practice, while maintaining privacy and support of the patient’s value system.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the health system environment and administrative issues that impact job performance, patient safety, and ethical considerations.
- Ensures that all physician orders are carried out appropriately and timely.
- Gathers and ensures that proper supplies and equipment are available in the OR and for the operation.
- Assists and passes medical instruments or other objects to the surgeon as needed during operation.
- Obtains concurrent vital signs to detect deviations from expected normal values and assesses condition.
- Consistently communicates effectively and respectfully with the patient to assure they understand all procedures and feel as comfortable as possible.
- Maintains consistent and accurate patient care documentation.
Education and Experience:
- Registered Nurse degree from an accredited school of nursing.
- Active State of Maine Nursing license or eligible for licensure.
- Knowledge of nursing in an ambulatory surgery center setting with emphasis on surgical risk factors, patient pre-, intra-, and post-operative learning needs preferred.
- Orthopedic nursing experience helpful.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required; PALS certification required within 6 months and no later than one year from date of hire.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary for interacting with patients, physicians, supervisors, and other staff.
- Skill in time management, prioritizing, and medical care coordination.
- Ability to organize and accomplish tasks, and have the flexibility to meet changing demands on a daily basis.
- Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to project and maintain a professional image.
- Ability to work independently and excel as part of a team.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Proficient computer skills.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Consistently performs hand hygiene practices for the prevention of infection.
- Assumes duties within or out of the sterile field as assigned.
- Demonstrates professionalism at all times.
- Responsible for maintaining licensure and relevant certifications; ongoing personal and professional growth and development.
- Keeps abreast of current issues involving patient care or practice issues by attending and participating in department, team, and practice meetings.
- Displays cooperative behavior and interacts positively and effectively with others to promote a team environment.
- Is proactive in identifying, reporting, and participating in the resolution of any potential or actual patient safety issues.
- Supports the Company’s Vision and Values.
- Performs other duties necessary to maintain the overall efficiency and continuity of the surgery center.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Daily use of computer operating instruments; stationary PC, Laptop PC, keyboard, and mouse.
- Light lifting of paperwork, folders, or other general record-keeping materials.
- Operation of various office equipment: fax machine, telephone & voice mail system, stationary/laptop computer, e-mail system, scanner, and copier.
- Lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.
- Walks frequently.
- May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Risk of exposure to hazardous conditions and blood-borne pathogens.
- Occasional reaching, twisting, bending.
