Summary: Progressive care nursing jobs involve care for patients requiring close monitoring and frequent assessment, but who aren't unstable enough to need ICU care. PCU nurses monitor cardiac and other critical vital signs and detect any changes, thereby enabling intervention of life-threatening or emergency situations. Reports to the Unit Supervisor.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides nursing care to critically ill patients diagnosed with heart attack, defibrillator or pacemaker implant, or other cardiac conditions.
- Proficient in performing and interpreting EKG.
- Able to recognize lethal dysrhythmias.
- Proficient team member in cardiac code.
- Monitors cardiac and other critical vital signs and detects any changes, thereby enabling intervention of life-threatening or emergency situations.
- Initiates and revises the patient's plan of care based on continuing assessments, including patient teaching and discharge planning.
- Incorporates clinical and technical aspects of care with nursing actions and interventions in accordance with established policies, standards, and procedures.
- Documents nursing interventions and patient response according to hospital policy.
- Evaluates effectiveness of nursing interventions and methods of implementation.
- Practices within the limits of the state's Nurse Practice Act and health care facility and nursing administrative policies.
- Supervises ancillary personnel in their performance of assigned job-related duties.
- Ensures patient confidentiality and the rights of the patient.
- Maintains and updates skills needed for excellence in patient care.
- Administers complex cardiac medications including titration based on the patient's vital signs.
Education & Experience Requirements:
Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing, with current licensure in good standing. Minimum of one year of current hospital experience in PCU Specialty. Evidence of current BLS and ACLS required.
