Job Summary:
The Medical Lab Technologist/Medical Technologist positions perform routine and special laboratory procedures, quality control, preventative maintenance, minor equipment repairs, inventory control, and statistical compilation. Will additionally participate in quality assurance, performance improvement, laboratory education, new employee training, and proficiency testing when assigned.
The Medical Lab Technologist/Medical Technologist role will be filled according to the education, experience, and qualifications of the selected candidate. Refer to Required Education and Experience.
Major Responsibilities / Duties / Critical Tasks:
- Promotes professionalism and interacts with colleagues in a way that promotes a cooperative working environment.
- Displays technical expertise necessary to ensure timely and accurate results of laboratory procedures.
- Ensure specimens are obtained and processed in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
- Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider.
- Supports organizational priorities to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Attains required competency and demonstrates the ability to follow procedural directions and protocols.
- Exhibits problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and evaluate critical laboratory results.
- Participates in the training/mentoring of new employees, students, or interns including lectures and bench techniques.
- Able to prioritize and organize workload and assist other coworkers to maintain productivity.
- Responsible for other duties as assigned.
- Engages in self-evaluation of practice and takes action to improve knowledge and skills.
- Promotes consensus building and applies techniques of conflict resolution and conduct improvement.
- Retains accountability for quality of care given to the patient.
- Promotes service excellence and growth of the laboratory.
Qualifications:
Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform phlebotomy procedures appropriate to the age of the patient.
- Must have basic computer skills.
- Demonstrates professional behavior and works collaboratively with the team and all stakeholders.
- Maintains good communications and a suitable working relationship between the phlebotomy section and other laboratory sections, other hospital employees, patients, and visitors.
Required Education / Experience:
- Medical Lab Tech I: Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technician studies, or a chemical, physical or biological science degree. ASCP or equivalent required.
- Medical Lab Tech II: Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technician studies, or a chemical, physical or biological science degree. ASCP or equivalent required. 5 Years of clinical laboratory experience as a MLT within a clinical laboratory.
- Medical Technologist I: Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technician studies, or a chemical, physical or biological science degree. ASCP or equivalent required.
- Medical Technologist II: Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technician studies, or a chemical, physical or biological science degree. ASCP or equivalent required. 5 Years of clinical laboratory experience as a MLT within a clinical laboratory.
Required license/certification: ASCP or equivalent required. Certification must be maintained without lapse during employment.
