Posting Summary
University Correctional Healthcare (UCHC) is seeking a per diem Mental Health Staff Nurse (RN) for the Northern State Prison in Newark, New Jersey. The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus. Works with a variety of health care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment. Frequently functions guided by nursing protocols. Functions as a team leader as assigned. Demonstrates competency in assessment and identification of the psychological and physical health of adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) all population groups and their personal strengths. Identifies inmate-centered goals and nursing objectives and implements prescribed interventions and solutions for the identified problems.
Responsibilities
- Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of the inmate-patient including adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) within the framework established by the correctional system.
- Uses psychiatric standards of nursing practice and classification of mental disorders to develop inmate treatment plans with specific goals and interventions delineating nursing actions unique to each inmate’s needs.
- Implements nursing actions that promote, maintain or restore physical and mental health of all age groups.
- Evaluates inmate responses in collaboration with multi-disciplinary care providers to ensure quality inmate care.
- Performs additional duties that are directly related to the workings of the milieu and its safety.
- Assumes responsibility for his/her continuing education and professional development and contributes to the professional growth of co-workers.
Position Status
Daily Work Shift: Rotating
Work Arrangement: This position requires a full onsite work arrangement.
Qualifications
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey.
- Minimum of one (1) year of psychiatric experience required.
- CPR Certification required.
- Valid Driver’s License required. Must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation from one site to another.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or its equivalent preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
As a first responder must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes. Physically able to lift and carry upstairs an emergency treatment bag that can weigh up to 45 pounds and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds).
Special Conditions
Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
