Description
The Clinical Athletic Trainer will work with a multidisciplinary team, including sports medicine Orthopaedic surgeons and primary care sports medicine providers to provide direct patient care. Responsibilities include evaluating, treating, and modifying treatment for a wide variety of patients in the Sports Medicine Department within the Division of Pediatric Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. Other responsibilities include home exercise therapy education, brace/crutch fitting, casting, patient education, facilitation of necessary ancillary services, and participation in research within the sports medicine field.
In collaboration with the Sports Medicine Team, the Clinical Athletic Trainer will develop and implement athletic training outreach services to local high schools and sports associations, including pre-participation evaluations, athletic training room evaluations, and game and event coverage.
The Clinical Athletic Trainer will provide education to athletes, coaches, parents, and members of the sports community on relevant sports medicine topics, assist athletes with return to play evaluations and exercise programs, and provide injury prevention evaluation and intervention.
Qualifications
Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree in athletic training; Master’s degree preferred.
Minimum Work Experience
1 year athletic training experience minimum; 3 years preferred.
Required Licenses and Certifications
Maryland Athletic Training License or eligible; Washington, DC Athletic Training License or eligible; Certification by the Board of Certification (BOC) in good standing; BLS CPR/AED certified.
Functional Accountabilities
Patient Treatment and Services
- Evaluate new and return patients, including present history, past medical/surgical history, medications, and allergies.
- Assist physician in referrals; order x-rays.
- Develop targeted diagnosis and management plans; inform patient/family.
- Measure and fit crutches and braces.
- Coordinate care and patient follow-up.
- Apply and remove basic and specialized bracing and casts.
- Participate in the Motion Capture Lab using advanced technology.
Patient/Family Education
- Ensure appropriate post-op, follow-up care; educate regarding home exercise therapy.
- Create education documents for patients and families.
Athletic Training Outreach Program
- Organize and implement training programs at local high schools.
- Establish relationships with athletic directors, coaches, and parents.
- Provide education to the sports community on relevant topics.
