Medical Lab Scientist or Medical Lab Technician - North Liberty - 60% Weekend Option, 2nd/3rd shift
The Department of Pathology is seeking multiple Medical Lab Technicians or Medical Lab Scientists to provide moderately and highly complex clinical lab testing and analysis on biological specimens to provide information used in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease.Will use a variety of procedures that may involve numerous detailed tests and techniques that require the use of professional judgment.
This position is 60%-time weekend option. Working hours will initially be M-F, 1 st shift with primary duties to include instrument validation, SOP development and miscellaneous training activities, which could include training other technologists. Beginning in Spring of 2025, hours would move to 2nd/3rd shift with 12-hours shifts on Saturday and Sunday between 6:30pm-7:30am. This will include holiday coverage for all holidays falling on the weekends and potential for on-call. There will be opportunities to cover additional shifts during the week.
The department intends to hire for one position from either Medical Laboratory Technician, or Medical Laboratory Scientist, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Please indicate in your application materials the position you wish to be considered for on indicate both.

Duties to include:
- Performs quantitative and qualitative analysis for both moderately and highly complex testing on laboratory clinical and research biological specimens such as blood, tissue/organ and body fluids.
- Dispenses blood products that are compatible for the patient being transfused.
- Dispenses tissue products to the OR.
- Prepares surgical specimens and other designated specimen types for transport to MCU.Prepares packing list/bill of lading as required/necessary.
- After consultation with/direction from a Decedent Care Specialist, and in collaboration with Safety/Security staff, releases decedents from the body hold cooler when necessary.

Required Qualifications:
Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT):
- Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited institution, or
- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or eligible from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA), or
- Successfully completed an official US military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician) is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS):
- A Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology program from an accredited institution.
- Six (6) months – One (1) year clinical laboratory experience, which may include program training experience is required.
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or a categorical/specialist certification in the appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) from Health Education and Welfare (HEW) is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Desirable Qualifications:
Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT):
- Certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA) as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is highly desirable.
- Previous experience in a laboratory performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood baking, chemistry, hematology, and/or microbiology, which may include program training experience, is highly desired.
Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS):
- Previous experience in a laboratory performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood baking, chemistry, hematology, and/or microbiology, which may include program training experience, is highly desired.

Pathology will be filling these positions at one of two levels. For a 60% weekend option position, the base Medical Lab Technician classification salary starts at $29,100, and the base Medical Lab Scientist salary starts at $32,100, in addition to weekend option premiums. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. You must indicate in your cover letter the level of classification (MLT and/or MLS) you wish to be considered for or indicate both.
