University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Nurse Manager to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of the Department Director.
Position Specific Summary:
Provide managerial and clinical leadership for the Neuropsychiatry Inpatient Unit (2JPW). Candidates will ensure that all staff provide safe clinical care and have the education, methods and resources to accomplish their performance objectives.
2JPW is a 19-bed adult unit that provides care for patients with general psychiatric conditions, with a particular emphasis on thought disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar, and other psychotic disorders. 2JPW also provides specialized services for adult patients with an intellectual disability and co-occurring mental illness (IDMI) who display challenging behaviors. The interdisciplinary treatment team includes physicians, psychologists, advanced practice providers, master-level therapists, nurses, social workers, dieticians, occupational and recreational therapists, behavioral health consultants, and a cadre of specialists who collaborate with the treatment team to support the IDMI population.
Positions in this job family usually have limited involvement in direct patient care and focus their efforts in planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical education programs and research programs of clinical and health service departments.

Schedule: Generally 0700-1530 Monday to Friday, plus additional hours to meet the needs of the unit. Flexibility with regard to actual hours and days of work is required.

Education or Equivalency Required:
- Master’s Degree in Nursing or related field. If Master’s Degree is in related field, Baccalaureate in Nursing is required.
- If qualified applicant does not have Master’s Degree in Nursing, the applicant will need to complete an advanced degree in nursing, health care administration, or business administration within five years of beginning this position.
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to obtain an Iowa license by date of hire is required.
Required Qualifications:
- Considerable (3-5 years) experience in leadership/management roles to include prior experience working with regulatory bodies and survey readiness.
- Previous RN experience with the psychiatric patient population
- Demonstrates skills for leading change and implementation of evidence based practice.
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and interdisciplinary team leadership skills.
- Must be proficient in computer software applications
- Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body. If not currently certified must seek certification in a role or specialty as soon as eligible to sit for the exam
- Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated the ability to do so
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience working with both medicine and psychiatric patient population
- Previous experience working in a large academic medical center
- Experience working in a union environment
