The Pediatric Palliative Care Manager for Brenner Children’s Hospital (BCH) is an advanced practice nurse with specialized experience and education in palliative and end-of-life care of children, program administration, and research-related activities. Responsible for oversight of all palliative care activities and operations as they relate to pediatrics within BCH and the Atrium Wake Forest Baptist enterprise. Works in collaboration with the Director of Nursing, Pediatric Critical Care and the Medical Director of the Pediatric Palliative Care Program to provide leadership to the pediatric palliative/complex care consult service (Pediatric Enhanced Care Program). Recruits, orients, and evaluates staff. Ensures compliance with regulatory, organizational, and nursing care standards. Plans, develops, coordinates, monitors, and evaluates the activities and operations of the Pediatric Enhanced Care Program service. Facilitates the development, implementation, and tracking of strategies and initiatives related to improving care to children with life-threatening illnesses.

Education / Experience:
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
- MSN or related master’s degree required
- Four or more years pediatric nursing experience, research and grant writing experience, previous experience in hospice, palliative care, or other end-of-life areas required.
Licensure, Certification and / or Registration:
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina
- Certification in specialty required within one year of hire
Essential Functions:
- Adheres to organizational standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships, and team building.
- Ensures that pediatric palliative care services are provided in accordance with Brenner Children’s Hospital and the Medical Center’s mission, strategic plans, and all internal/external regulations, policies, and procedures with focus on quality, satisfaction, and efficiency.
- Supports caregivers of children with medical complexity and palliative care needs through clinical education and identifying resources.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary providers of the Pediatric Enhanced Care Program and other hospital teams/ services (e.g., inpatient team, specialists, multidisciplinary clinics) to transition children with medical complexity from hospital to home/other settings by participating in rounds and multidisciplinary clinics, facilitating interdisciplinary meetings, or working with individual providers.
- Communicates, serves as a liaison, and provides clinical support to referring physicians (primary-care and specialist) and other community providers (e.g., home health agencies and DME) in the care of children with medical complexity in the community.
- Assess the needs of children with medical complexity and help other clinicians meet the needs of children with medical complexity by assessing medical records comprehensively.
- Provides leadership including hiring, orienting, and evaluating Palliative Care team members. Evaluates teammate performance and ensures competencies.
- Participates in professional activities related to palliative care, end-of-life activities, and hospice care.
- Participates in data collection and research-related activities related to team functions and achievements.
- Identifies and manages system-level issues related to pediatric palliative care and works with providers within BCH and community to make the system better for children with serious illnesses and their families.
