Summary Description
Under the supervision of a Superintendent or 1st Class Line Foreperson and 1st Class Lineman, performs various tasks related to the layout and installation of various commercial and industrial electrical systems.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Complies with and ensures compliance with all Tri-M safety policies and procedures.
- Complies with and ensures compliance with all Tri-M employment policies and procedures including standards of conduct and appearance to reflect positively on the Company.
- Reads and interprets construction drawings (i.e., electrical, mechanical, architectural, etc.).
- Performs layout of assigned tasks.
- Terminates 5 KV cable and up with cold shrink kits (Perform hand splice with supervision).
- Installs various outdoor lighting systems.
- Installs underground duct bank systems.
- Installs outdoor transformers and capacitors with supervision.
- Installs medium voltage cable and terminates it properly.
- Troubleshoots electrical problems utilizing appropriate test equipment with supervision.
- Assures compliance with National Electrical Code and High Voltage Electrical Safety.
- Conducts appropriate on-the-job training of apprentices.
- Safeguards and maintains tri-M equipment, tools and vehicles.
- Assures that quality and productivity meet Company and customer standards.
- Keeps up to date of new techniques and developments in the electrical construction trade.
- Recommends improved methods of operation.
- Assures that good housekeeping practices are maintained at the job site.
- Attends hot line schools and rigging schools.
Job Qualifications
Skills/Educational Requirements:
- High school diploma.
- Completion of a state-approved apprenticeship program or equivalent.
- Minimum of four years’ experience in the electrical trade.
- Ability to operate bucket truck, line truck, large trencher, 580 backhoe.
- Ability to identify and operate meters used in the electrical construction industry (recording volt and amp meters, meggers).
- Ability to size, install and connect single- and three-phase transformers utilizing standard connections.
- Ability to calculate (voltage drop, mixed conductor conduit fill, conductor derating).
- Ability to terminate 3-m cold shrinks and molded splice for medium voltage cable with the supervision of line foreperson or the superintendent.
- Have current lineperson/cableperson handbook.
- Ability to properly lay out and administer small jobs (normally one to three men).
- Understanding of basic troubleshooting techniques.
- Good working knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC) and the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), and the high voltage electrical safety book.
- Good character, neat appearance.
- Good mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to climb height of 70 ‘on poles or scaffolds.
- Maintain a valid commercial driver’s license-Class A (CDL) or in the process of obtaining and a history of safe driving.
- Must have reliable personal transportation to and from the assigned work location/office.
- Must purchase Company required personal tools and maintain in good condition.
- Ability and willingness to travel nationally to jobsites.
- Confident, decisive, safety oriented and self-motivated.
- Proficient with use of laptop and tablet.
Physical Requirements:
- Working 40 hours/week, scheduled in 8 to 10-hour shifts.
- Standing and climbing 4 to 6 hours/day.
- Kneeling, lifting, reaching above shoulders, and bending (90º) 4 to 5 hours/day.
- Twisting (180º) and walking 2 to 3 hours/day.
- Squatting and sitting 1 to 2 hours/day.
- Lifting weights of 0 to 100 lbs. at the following frequencies: continuous lifting of 10 to 35 lbs.; frequent lifting of 35 to 50 lbs.; occasional lifting of 50 to 100 lbs.; sizes & shapes of objects vary from concrete blocks to cylinders to 20' lengths of conduit; average carry requirements, 60 lbs. for 40'.
- Ability to lift from floor to above shoulder.
- Repetitive use of hands includes: continuous grasping up to 50 lbs.; frequent pushing and pulling of 50 to 75 lbs.; and fine motor coordination for receptacle installation and wire terminations.
- Repetitive use of feet is required for operating heavy equipment, conduit benders, and vertical climbing.
- Vision adequate for blueprint reading and color-coding for wire identification.
- Balance adequate for continuous climbing of ladders, scaffolds, and lifts, wooden poles, metal light poles.
- Environmental factors include working in: temperature extremes of 0º F to 100º F; up to 8 hours inside or outside; atmospheric exposure to dust, gases, fumes, odors; and poor ventilation in confined spaces.
- Special hazards include exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and explosive hazards.
- Personal protective equipment includes use of hard hat, safety glasses, protected-toe boots, and appropriate gloves for the task. Equipment on an "as needed" basis may include fall protection, dust mask, respirator, hearing protection, arc flash protective gear, and dielectrically insulated gloves and/or sleeves, etc.
