The school nursing team provides comprehensive school health nursing services to school-age children in the areas of health promotion and disease prevention while also safeguarding their integrity and recognizing their right to make their own decisions.
The Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for implementing the School Health Services program under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse. The LPN-Float will provide comprehensive nursing services to individuals, families and communities in the areas of health promotion and disease prevention while safeguarding their integrity and recognizing their right to make their own decisions. Duties include:
- Expand clinical base of nursing knowledge and skills
- Conduct various screenings (i.e. vision, hearing, BMI)
- Evaluation and treatment of conditions
- Clinical referrals
- Assist the RN in determining the needs of the general student population and children with special health care needs
Qualifications
Minimum Work Experience
3 years
Specific Requirements and Preferences
Supervised nursing experience in community health or child health prior to entry into school nursing practice. (Required)
Experience in the care of school-aged children. (Required)
Required Skills/Knowledge
Knowledge and understanding of a school health program, including recognizing trends relating to school health as well as developmental patterns and needs of school-age children.
Knowledge of the techniques of data collection for an analysis of health needs.
Knowledge of a wide variety of medical conditions, diagnoses, and specific diseases.
Knowledge of medications and medication administration practices.
Ability to provide general health information to school age children and families with a wide variety of health problems under the supervision of a registered nurse.

4. Participate in school health educational activities, committees or projects.

6. Collaborate with multidisciplinary team in the school setting.
7. Works closely with the RN to provide follow-up until student needs are met.
Nursing Process
1. Manage acute, complex, chronic and communicable health problems, such as reporting communicable diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, asthma, neurological conditions, hypertension and diabetes in the school setting.
2. Contribute to individualized plan of care and execute plan utilizing resources as needed.
3. Provide documentation based on school health/hospital standards.
4. Identify ongoing education of school age child/families based on plan of care.
5. Evaluate school age child/family response to education and document progress towards goals.

Full-Time Salary Range: 53,705 - 70,948
