Job Description Summary
The Surgical Technologist extern reports to the nurse manager. Under direct supervision of the Certified Surgical Tech/Scrub nurse, the extern functions as a member of the operating room team to prepare sterile supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures and perform appropriate room duties involved with direct patient care, adhering to established procedural guidelines. This position demonstrates knowledge and skills required to provide care and service appropriate to the level of development of patients, considering the needs of patients' families.

Education/Experience: High school diploma. Currently enrolled in a Surgical Tech program.
Required License Certification and Registration: A current CPR card is required; either an American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers card or an American Red Cross Professional Rescuer card is required.
Physical Requirements: Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, and walking (Continuous). Ability to climb stairs (Infrequent). Ability to work indoors (Continuous) and outdoors in temperature extremes (Infrequent). Ability to perform various physical tasks, including lifting and carrying (up to 50 lbs unassisted, infrequent), bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching in all directions (Continuous). Ability to maintain hearing acuity and vision capabilities (Continuous). Ability to work rotating shifts and overtime as required (Frequent).
Additional Job Description
Graduation from an accredited school of surgical technology or surgical technology military program is preferred. Certified Surgical Technologist credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (formerly LCC-ST) is preferred; if not certified, evidence of continuous employment in the state of South Carolina as a Surgical Technologist before January 1, 2008 is required. New graduates must obtain certification within 90 days of graduation. Basic Life Support certification is required within 2 weeks of hire and must be maintained thereafter.
