The Medical Technologist performs various routine or special chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic laboratory tests. The duties of a Medical Technologist may be specific to a particular area of the laboratory, such as chemistry, hematology, microbiology, or the blood bank. LOCATED IN ASCENSION PARISH.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor's Degree
Skills and Training: Training, temporary, or letter of pending permit issued by LSBME
Licensure: Licensed in Louisiana as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Generalist
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs an acceptable productivity level without a significant error rate on a variety of medical technology procedures including but not limited to performing tests on cells and microorganisms in body fluids, examining growth patterns of bacteria and fungus in patient specimens and cultures, analyzing blood and other body fluids, and performing blood compatibility testing.
- Demonstrates initiative in adapting to changes or unusual circumstances, especially those not covered by written or verbal instructions, in a way that promotes cooperation and minimizes disruption to the working environment.
- Assists in care and maintenance of laboratory work area and furnishings/equipment.
- Coordinates, plans, and utilizes time efficiently in an effort to prioritize and organize duties while remaining flexible to meet the needs of the laboratory customers. Maintains an inventory of supplies in work areas as necessary to ensure efficient departmental operations and avoid the duplication of energy and services whenever possible.
- Quality is paramount in all aspects of daily functions and work processes to include specimen preparation, assaying, interpretation, and results reporting in compliance with established policies and procedures. Performs quality control and instrument check procedures, and maintains accurate and complete records of daily activities.
- Combines ethical judgment with technical skill within the policy and legal guidelines of the hospital and laboratory in decision-making processes and in the performance of procedures.
- Observes and adheres to all departmental and hospital policies and procedures, and follows all safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards.
- Consistently exhibits a professional manner, appearance, and performance in the approach to job-related duties in an effort to maintain high standards in the delivery of quality health care services. When in contact with patients of different age ranges (e.g., pediatric, adolescent, geriatric), performs all patient care duties in a manner that demonstrates a humanistic attitude for the physical and psychological needs relevant to the age of the patient served.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with patients, physicians, pathologists, staff, and other individuals.
