Laboratory Supervisor

The Laboratory Supervisor is a highly skilled medical technologist who tests and analyzes blood and other body substances to aid health care providers in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Laboratory supervisors are responsible for overseeing laboratory personnel, implementing processes, operating, maintaining and troubleshooting the equipment used to analyze specimens and ensuring that automated and manual tests are completed in an accurate and timely manner.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Assist with the implementation of new tests/platforms and projects.
- Analyze and test specimens, including proficiency testing, quality control and manual procedures, and report appropriately according to protocol. Supervises laboratory personnel to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained and may perform bench assignments and scheduling.
- Utilize complex information systems and middleware; collect and interpret data, including quality control.
- Maintain adequate inventory and conserve resources.
- Operate, maintain and troubleshoot equipment. May perform validation and correlation studies, including consultation with manufacturers if problems occur.
- Coordinate staff training, competencies and performance reviews.
- Maintain a compliant environment, including adherence to all lab and hospital procedures, NYS, TJC, HIPAA standards and infection control/safety guidelines. Oversee internal and external proficiency testing, address recalls and manufacturer changes as indicated. Prepare for and participate in applicable inspections.
- Monitors performance improvement activities and maintain inter-and intra-departmental work flow by cooperating with others. Develop effective relationships with users and suppliers, and lead regular meetings. Keeps lab management team informed of status and concerns.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology (or equivalent) and registered as a Medical Technologist/Clinical Lab Scientist by American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent.
- Licensure: Meets NYS Department of Health requirements and is currently licensed as a Clinical Lab Scientist.
- Experience: Previous hospital laboratory experience is preferred.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Problem solving ability and attention to detail is preferred.
- Good written and oral communication skills preferred.
- Requires ability to prioritize work, manage time wisely and adjust to changes in work volumes.
Physical Requirements:
- May require light lifting and carrying, including boxes, equipment, stooping and kneeling, maybe required to lift up to 30 pounds. Repetitive use of hands (eg. computer keyboard usage), sitting, walking or standing for long periods of time is often necessary; must be able physically to operate automation used in the job.
