POSITION PURPOSE: Certified surgical technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate safe and effective invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures. They ensure the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.
NATURE AND SCOPE: The Certified Surgical Technologist's (CST) responsibilities include handling of instrumentation, supplies, and equipment necessary for surgical procedures. They have an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon. They possess the necessary knowledge and the ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and are constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.
The CST, acting as a second assisting surgical technologist, assists the surgeon and/or First Assistant during the operative procedure by carrying out technical tasks. This role is distinct from that of the First Assistant and may in some circumstances, be performed at the same time as the scrub role.
The CST will also occasionally be required to function in the role of sterile processing technician to clean, decontaminate, disinfect and/or sterilize surgical instruments, trays and reusable medical devices according to established standards. This is necessary primarily during on-call hours following urgent surgical procedures.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- The position of Certified Surgical Technologist requires that the person possess active certification. CSTs maintain their certification by accruing 60 contact hours of approved continuing education in a consecutive 4-year period, or by successfully retaking the certifying examination at the conclusion of the 4-year period.
- The individual in this position must possess, and maintain, a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Speaking, listening, the ability to move frequently from one task to another using several different skills, the ability to make decisions based on facts, the ability to use fingers and hands, the ability to work accurately with detail, good vision and eye-hand coordination are all required during the surgical experience.
Education/Job Criteria
- High School Diploma or GED
- Graduate of a surgical technology program
- Certified Surgical Technologist
- A minimum of two years’ experience as a CST working in an operating room environment is preferred
- Active BLS certification, or obtained within 30 days of hire
- Willingness to work flexible hours
- Ability/willingness to take call
- Willingness to assist in special projects as assigned
- Demonstrated full understanding of patient safety and privacy rights
- Demonstrated ability to maintain skills under extreme duress

ENVIRONMENT:
South Peninsula Hospital is a combined 40 bed acute care and long term care facility located at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula. The surgery unit consists of two general operating rooms and one endoscopy suite. The position requires standing for extended periods of time without a break, in bright, artificially lighted rooms. Persons in this position are exposed to infectious diseases, including various blood-borne pathogens, potential muscle strains, possible needle stick injuries, and exposure to anesthetic gases. Generally, physical demands are moderate and all work is performed inside.
