JOB PURPOSE:
The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing and interpreting laboratory tests in the clinical laboratory.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist Laboratory Manager with daily lab functions.
- Maintain a quality control program appropriate for testing performed in the lab.
- Implement, initiate, update and perform clinical laboratory procedures according to proper standards and regulations.
- Document Quality Assurance.
- Resolve technical problems and take remedial actions whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established specifications.
- Review all QC and maintenance logs.
- Ensure safety for all personnel in the lab.
- Participate in regular proficiency testing programs appropriate for the lab testing done.
- Maintain all appropriate laboratory paperwork and keep copies for 2 years.
- Troubleshoot laboratory equipment and computer systems, ensuring accurate and reliable results.
- Order and maintain testing supplies and equipment.
- Perform laboratory testing such as chemistries, hematology, and immunoassay testing.
- Assist in new staff training.
- Have a general understanding of the LIS function.
- Handle laboratory data collection systems and equipment to ensure requests for laboratory tests are properly ordered, cancelled, and charged.
- Correctly identify all patients to avoid mistakes that can affect treatment.
- Perform specimen processing, preparation, and distribution of specimens.
- Maintain a constant awareness of policies and procedures, ensuring enforcement of infection control processes when working with or around patients.
- Effectively communicate with patients, reassuring them and making them feel at ease when present. Communicate courteously, promptly, and politely both on the phone and face to face, and document all information correctly.
- Keep all work areas clean and properly stocked.
- Handle information with discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Coordinate and consult with the lab manager regarding lab-related issues.
- Able to work independently and in a team environment.
- Comply with all OSHA, CLIA, and federal regulations.
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
- Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and other software programs.
- Participate in center/agency surveys (Licensure/JCAHO) and any subsequently required reports.
- Attend and participate in continuing educational programs to keep abreast of changes in your field as well as to maintain current license/certification, as required.
- Attend and participate in mandatory in-services.
- Honor patients/residents’ rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy, property, and civil rights, including the right to wage complaints.
- Comply with the corporate compliance program.
- Report job-related functions/tasks that involve occupational hazards including exposure to blood and body fluids and others as necessary.
- Follow established safety regulations, including fire protection & prevention, smoking regulations, infection control, etc.
- Follow established safety procedures when performing tasks and/or working with equipment.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- All applicants shall meet at least one (1) of the following education/experience requirements: B.S. degree in medical technology, or chemical, physical, or biological sciences, plus three (3) years’ experience in a clinical laboratory, OR B.S. degree in medical technology, or chemical, physical, or biological sciences, plus successful completion of a specialist certification exam (SH ASCP, SBB ASCP, SM-ASCP, SC-ASCP, SI-ASCP, or DLM ASCP) with a total of three (3) years’ experience in a clinical laboratory, OR Master's degree in administration, management, medical technology, chemical, physical, or biological science, plus three (3) years’ experience in a clinical laboratory, OR have state-recognized certification as a Medical Technologist.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
1 year experience preferred but not required.
MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW:
ASCP, AAB or AMT (must be current)
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to pass a standardized color blindness test.
Physical Requirements:
Requires standing for long periods of time. Working in a laboratory environment. Bending and stretching required. Ability to lift five to ten pounds. Working in a fast-paced environment and use of telephone and computer are required. Manual dexterity required for use of computer keyboard.
