POSITION SUMMARY:
**Must have critical care nursing (RN) and leadership experience.
The Nurse Manager - Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has oversight of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a trauma center / teaching hospital.
The ICU is a 29-bed unit that cares for high-acuity medical, surgical, and neuro patients. Nurses have a 2:1 patient ratio. The ICU has about 88 FTEs including nurses, nursing support, and clerical. The ICU Nurse Manager has 3 Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) direct reports. The ICU Nurse Manager is responsible for ensuring that safe, age-appropriate patient care is provided during hours of unit operation. Functions as role model, advisor, resource, and leader for other members of the patient care team.
Leadership/Resource Management:
Ensures appropriate utilization of resources and skill mix to meet patient care needs on unit. Demonstrates competency in leadership. Ensures appropriate staff is scheduled to accommodate patients and departmental needs on a 24-hour basis. Serves as Chief Retention Officer to establish and maintain an effective health care team. Prioritizes unit activities based on available resources, management principles and Evidence-Based Practices. Evaluates staff in a timely manner using reliable and objective performance management criteria.
Performance Improvement:
Establishes and maintains processes to evaluate the delivery of care in an ongoing manner. Works with multidisciplinary groups to design and implement a plan for unit process improvements. Sets benchmarks or indicators and monitors compliance by evaluating patient outcomes, satisfaction levels and staffing effectiveness. Investigates adverse events and provides follow-up, taking appropriate corrective action and identifying trends.
Fiscal Management:
Manages and prepares operations/capital budget to provide needed resources in accordance with patient needs and established care standards. Develops realistic operational and capital budget based on financial projections and organizational priorities. Monitors productivity on a regular basis and provides appropriate levels of human resources to meet patient care needs.
Compliance:
Ensures staff awareness of and compliance with patient safety, policy procedures and regulatory requirements. Communicates to staff the expectations for learning and implementing new or revised standards. Develops and implements action plans to address areas out of compliance.
Professional Development:
Maintains and supports an environment that promotes accountability for professional growth and development. Collaborates with relevant departments in the development of unit/division specific orientation content and staff developmental plans. Promotes structural empowerment by encouraging active participation in unit and hospital-based committees and councils.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) from a CCNE accredited School of Nursing
- 3-5 years relevant experience; 5 years progressive nursing experience in specified field with preference for demonstrated progression in supervisory responsibilities
- Maryland Registered Nurse License (RN)
- American Heart Association CPR Certification (BLS)
- National Certification preferred within one year of hire
IDEAL CANDIDATE:
Must have critical care (ICU) nursing experience, preferably in a trauma center. Must have ICU or ICUSD nursing leadership experience with staff direct reports, such as prior nurse manager, nursing director, or assistant manager.

Salary: $120,000.00 - $140,000.00 per year
