Overview
The Student Nurse Aide works under the direction of the RN/LPN. The responsibilities of the Student Nurse include providing direct patient care standards. The Student Nurse must exhibit the ability to work with people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds; to organize, set priorities and manage multiple priorities, and to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
Responsibilities
- Provides basic and select advanced nursing care to patients within the Student Nurse Aide’s scope of practice that includes actions that meet psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, and physical needs. Advanced nursing activities that may be delegated to the competent Student Nurse Aide by the RN/LPN include simple dressing changes, phlebotomy, PIV removal, routine medication administration, and more as defined by policy.
- Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient’s age, gender, socioeconomic status, education, physical and mental abilities, and racial and ethnic background.
- Assists in admission, transfer and discharge of patients.
- Provides explanation to patients and families prior to administering care; answers questions within scope of practice.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function appropriately in stressful situations.
- Responds to patients in emergency or physically distressing situations.
- Documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Assumes accountability for appropriate utilization of resources.
- Performs other duties as assigned, within the Student Nurse Aide’s scope of practice.
Qualifications
Education: High School/GED required.
Candidates must meet the following criteria: Completed a minimum of one year of clinical experience within an academic nursing program, and completed the following educational courses and clinical experience: Fundamentals of Nursing and Pharmacology including medication administration.Currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited Associated Degree, Diploma or Baccalaureate Professional Nursing Program. (Nursing graduates pending passage of the NCLEX are eligible.)
License, Certification and/or Registration: BLS required before the conclusion of the orientation period.
