This is a Medical Laboratory Supervisor I position that will provide direct laboratory staffing supervision, planning, and coordination for all testing services performed by the NCSLPH Microbiology Unit’s Bacteriology, Parasitology, and Mycology laboratories. This position will maintain the section’s quality assurance program and will be responsible for overseeing specimen testing and reporting. This position will also assist in managing the validation and onboarding of new microbiological and molecular techniques used to identify and characterize a variety of infectious pathogens.
Duties at this position also include providing testing consultation to physicians, epidemiologists, nurses, and other laboratorians, and the routine use of a laboratory information management system (LIMS). This position routinely coordinates with the NC Communicable Disease Branch (NC CDB), NC Healthcare-acquired Infection group (NC HAI), and CDC for public health outbreak investigations and laboratory response. Candidates must be able to adapt to changing requirements that can arise in a dynamic work environment and work well within multidisciplinary teams.
Areas of responsibility and duties include but are not limited to:
- Provide direct laboratory supervision of the NCSLPH Microbiology Unit’s Bacteriology, Parasitology, and Mycology laboratories.
- Provide regulatory oversight of Quality Management Systems (QMS) and assist in managing the validation and onboarding of new microbiological and molecular techniques.
- Maintain responsibility for patient reports and provide laboratory testing consultation to physicians, epidemiologists, nurses, and other laboratorians.
- Provide daily supervision to testing personnel, manage staff trainings, manage proficiency testing programs, and perform competency assessments per CLIA regulatory guidelines.
- Manage section’s standard operating procedures.
- Monitor and document section’s quality indicators.
- Manage LIMS (Laboratory Information System) and document compliance software for patient information, quality control, results, and document management.
- Manage and procure section’s testing reagents, equipment, and consumables.
- Coordinate with local and federal partners for outbreak investigations and laboratory response.
Work is performed at Biosafety Levels 2 & 2+ using proper containment techniques and personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. Surge capacity response during viral, bacterial, and/or fungal public health disease clusters, outbreaks, and/or pandemics is required. Work may require extended work hours to include weekends and/or holidays during public health emergencies and/or routine specimen processing.
Minimum Requirements:
- Must meet Federal CLIA ’88 personnel requirements for Technical Supervisor in a high complexity laboratory. Candidates must attach a copy of their transcript(s) and/or certification(s) to qualify for consideration.
- Experience with clinical microbiology procedures using classical microbiological and molecular techniques for the identification and characterization of infectious pathogens.
- Experience troubleshooting, interpreting, and communicating laboratory results.
- Experience managing new method verifications and validations.
- Experience with CLIA and/or CAP regulations and undergoing audits and inspections.
Management Preferences:
- American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification.
- Previous experience in a public health laboratory.
- Previous experience supervising laboratory professionals.
- Knowledge and/or experience of phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST).
Physical Requirements:
- An occupational medical assessment may be required to determine your ability to safely work with biological, chemical, or radiological hazards. This position may also require periodic medical screenings to confirm safety practices are effectively preventing occupational injury or illness.
- Works frequently with infectious disease agents that require the use of personal protective equipment.
- Requires the ability to distinguish colors and requires close visual acuity to perform data analysis and visual inspection of specimens using standard laboratory equipment.
- Requires the ability to use laboratory equipment, manipulate items with fingers, to grasp, and to feel/perceive the attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a laboratory in the assigned area, one of which is in a supervisory or other leadership capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications:
Must be capable of meeting the Federal CLIA 88 personnel requirements for a general supervisor in a laboratory performing high complexity testing.
