The position is responsible for detection and surveillance leading to identification, eradication and/or management of pests; assists in training staff; directs the work of seasonal laboratory aides; participates in community education events and presentations; produces and/or reviews public information materials; tests birds, mosquitoes and ticks for disease; is responsible for scheduling surveys and studies to effectively cover assigned duties and for exercising judgment in evaluating mosquito and vector producing conditions and in choosing the most effective control method for any given situation; and related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- EITHER: A Bachelor's Degree in Entomology, Biology, or Chemistry from an accredited college or university and five (5) years of professional experience in the field of entomology or urban pest management.
- OR: A Bachelor's Degree in any area from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of professional experience in the field of entomology or urban pest management.
- OR: A Master's of Science Degree in Entomology, Biology, or Public Health with at least fifteen (15) semester hours of entomology and/or mammalogy courses from an accredited college or university and one (1) year of professional experience in the field of entomology or urban pest management. Master's Degree transcript must be submitted to the Civil Service Department within two (2) weeks of filing your application.
- OR: A Ph. D. in Entomology or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

Background Check: The hiring department will conduct interviews of qualified individuals prior to requesting a criminal background check, and no job application submitted prior to such interview shall inquire into an applicant’s criminal history. Employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation including criminal history. Criminal history will not automatically disqualify a candidate.
Working Test Period: Effective August 1, 2023, the working test (probationary) period for all positions in the classified service is one year.
Substance Abuse Testing: The City of New Orleans has a comprehensive program of substance abuse testing. Candidates for employment for certain positions will have to undergo pre-employment substance abuse screening.
Good Moral Character: Required of all applicants. Any applicant may be disqualified if his/her character or past employment record is found to be unsatisfactory.
Important: Applicants who are licensed to drive should have a current license on their person for purposes of identification during all phases of an examination.
Veterans Preference: On original entrance examinations, veterans shall receive additional credit if claimed as provided on the Veterans Preference claim form.
Accredited Colleges and Universities: An accredited college or university is an institution that is accredited as a college or university by an organization recognized by the USDE.
