Position Overview: The primary role of the Surgical Technician is in the scrub role, providing necessary and appropriate equipment, instrumentation and supplies in the service areas supported by the facility. The Surgical Technician also performs non-clinical activities and other unit tasks as delegated by the Staff RN to support the interdisciplinary care team.
Job Description:
Patient Care Process
- Provides non-judgmental care towards all patients, regardless of lifestyle, race, religion or belief
- Participates in planning and implementation of patient care by use of Surgeons preference card
- Uses Preference Cards to ensure all the proper equipment is available and in working order prior to the surgery
- Reviews cases the day before to ensure set up is in order and functioning
- Assists with Operating Room equipment set-up
- Assembles necessary supplies, instruments and sutures needed for procedure
- Opens case supplies and trays
- Assists in moving patients from gurney/bed to Operating Room table when applicable
- Assists with proper positioning of the patient on the Operating Room table when applicable
- Utilizes knowledge of safety measures to assist in patient care
- Participates in Time Out procedure to the exact requirements of the protocol
- Demonstrates early recognition of potential and developing problems and reports them timely to Surgical team
- Demonstrates ability to operate all equipment required to perform job safely, per manufacture guidelines and hospital policy
- Utilizes patient mobilization equipment
- Prepares operating room, uses sterile technique
- Understands the surgical procedure well enough so that they can anticipate what the physician is going to need before the need arises
- Breakdown the room and prepares it for the next patient
- Applies scrubs gowns and gloves for selves and MDs using sterile technique
- Sets up sterile tables
- Performs counts per protocol
- Cleans and sterilizes equipment
- Assists with dressings
- Holds Retractors and or instruments as directed
- Sponges or suctions as directed
- Cuts suture as directed
- Connects drains as directed
Teamwork
- Is able to anticipate and handle unexpected situations
- Manages multiple priorities systematically, keeping team members informed of the plan
- Is self-directed, resolving minor problems on own and if unable utilizes chain of command

Medical / Technical / Aseptic Skills
- Complies with aseptic practices to assure a safe environment for the patient and staff
- Recognizes and corrects breaks in aseptic techniques when they occur
- Assures all equipment and instruments are functional, before use
- Operates mechanical, electrical and air-powered equipment safely, efficiently and correctly
- Performs “Flash” sterilization process according to hospital policy
- Performs Sponge, Needle and Instruments counts per hospital policy
- Pre-cleans contaminated instruments per hospital policy
- Adheres to Operating Room sanitation policies
Communication
- Communicates patients plan of care to co-workers and on-coming/off-going shift and between departments in a positive manner
- Establishes positive rapport with physicians and co-workers
- Uses SBAR format for patient handoffs
- Utilizes closed loop communication to ensure messages are received and acknowledged to ensure safe patient care

- Accepts responsibility for own actions and takes a proactive approach to problem resolution
- Takes responsibility to become familiar with new process or procedures and to get checked off within required time frame

EDUCATION
Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.
HS Diploma or equivalent education/experience
Associate's
Other: Completion of Surgical Technician training program or prior experience as a Surgical Technician
CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE
CST-Certified Surgical Technologist
BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AS TYPICALLY ACQUIRED IN:
Recent Operating Room experience in an acute care facility in the scrub role.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
In-depth knowledge of medical terminology, ability to work with all levels of nursing personnel and physicians and assist them in a resource capacity, effective English written and verbal communication skills.

Pay Range is $40.95 to $51.43 / hour
The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
