ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Works under the general direction of the assigned Director to provide medical treatment for ill and injured animals. Performs preventative veterinary care to maintain a healthy animal population and to create a healthy environment for animals located at the Memphis Animal Shelter. Participates in major operations and planning decisions in regard to animal care and health. Performs surgical sterilization on animals. Evaluates and corrects post-surgical complications. Provides surgical support for injuries in accordance with animal service policies. Provides daily evaluation of animals at the center. Performs daily evaluations of bite cases for rabies observation. Diagnoses and determines appropriate treatment plan for adoption returns and sick animals. Evaluates and determines appropriate treatment for injured animals, including pain relief and euthanasia. Supervises the administration of vaccinations for animals housed at the center. Communicates with staff and general public on veterinary related issues. Maintains inventory of all medical supplies. Coordinates veterinary services with accepted animal services operations and supervisory staff.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing. Requires some physical exertion such as walking, standing for long periods of time, bending, or similar activities. May require considerable and strenuous physical exertions such as lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: The work environment involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around irritant chemicals, sharp instruments, etc. May be required to use protective clothing or gear, such as masks, coats, goggles, or gloves.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited Veterinary School of Medicine. Must possess a current, valid Tennessee license to practice veterinary medicine and possess a current DEA license within 90 days of hire and maintain as a condition of continued employment. Experience and knowledge of veterinary medicine, treatment, and care as it relates to the care of shelter animals.
