Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health invites applications for the position of Licensed Practical Nurse for multiple shifts. Located in Norfolk, Virginia, Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health is a leading community partner providing Acute, Residential, and Partial Hospitalization treatment for children and teens exhibiting behavioral and/or mental health concerns. The hospital is dedicated to providing high quality care to children, adolescents, and their families. Founded in 1986, Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health is an 82-bed hospital facility accredited by The Joint Commission (TJC) and licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS); the facility is currently expanding, adding additional beds to better serve a greater community.
Reporting to the Registered Nurse Manager, the LPN/LVN is responsible for implementing and evaluating all aspects of nursing care on an assigned unit for patients (adolescents and teens). The LPN also sets the professional example by leading and mentoring Mental Health Technicians (MHT) and ancillary staff members. Candidates are encouraged to submit their credentials as early as possible.

Additional duties and responsibilities include:
- Assess patient’s normal and abnormal physiological, psychological, and social factors; documents pertinent information; plans patient treatment.
- Ensures consistent use of the nursing and residential care process in providing quality care.
- Maintains patient’s physiological status by administering necessary treatments or interventions and demonstrates understanding of treatment, interventions, and procedures for implementation.
- Applies knowledge and understanding of growth and development philosophies in assessment of the adolescent, development of the treatment plan, and in the application of interventions.
- Collaborates with other department personnel in establishing and complying with resident care standards, policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Provides successful therapeutic clinical interventions on an age-appropriate level, which assists the patient in modifying thought, perception, affect, behavior, and/or motivation.
- Fosters effective communication in the milieu consistent with therapeutic goals; fosters effective communication with staff members, and champions dialogue in addressing concerns.
- The LPN/LVN promotes patient care consistent with the philosophy and objectives of UHS Kempsville Center and the ANA Standards of Practice for Psychiatric Mental Health Care.
- Serves as a role model for patients/residents to observe and learn socially effective values, attitudes, and behaviors and demonstrates Service Excellence.
- Interprets facility and departmental policies and works cohesively with department.
Qualifications
- Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia or compact authority, as a LPN.
- Graduation from an accredited nursing program with active licensure and registration by the Virginia Board of Nurse Examiners, as a LPN/LVN.
- Experience as a LPN, providing clinical care, generally equivalent to 1 or more years; experience in behavioral health strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of general addictions and psychiatric nursing process, therapeutic relationships and processes, age-specific growth and development, limit setting crisis, and behavior management strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Skill in the use of computer systems and software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel).
- Demonstrated working knowledge of the Joint Commission/CMS requirements, and both state and federal regulatory requirements strongly preferred.
- Must be able to handle multiple competing tasks, with minimum supervision, and take initiative on matters of revolving urgency.
- CPR/BLS certification required.
