POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of a staff pharmacist, and/or the investigational drug services pharmacy manager, follows established policies and procedures to perform a variety of technical and clerical support tasks that are integral to the operation of the investigational drug services program of the pharmacy department. Supports and assists the staff pharmacists in the ethical practice of pharmacy by processing orders and ensuring delivery to patients in a timely manner.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
- Compliance with all Federal, State and Local laws, regulations and rules; compliance with all accreditation standards and knowledge of and adherence to all policies and procedures of the organization and department.
- Responsible for the creation and maintenance of a healthy work environment.
- Being engaged in the department, including managing up, owning team decisions and communicating and supporting departmental and or organizational initiatives.
- Hold self and others to the highest ethical standards, and act with honor above all.
- Can competently complete tasks of a technician level I or II as needed.
- Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, assists the department in providing effective, appropriate, and safe investigational drug services.
- Maintains all required records and documents.
- Enters updated information in the computer system.
- Facilitates the management of medication inventories by checking supply levels, storage conditions and expiration dating and re-ordering as necessary.
- Supports the department in the ethical practice of pharmacy on a daily basis by processing prescription orders in a timely manner and in preparing medications, solutions, ointments, sterile products and other compounds as directed. Ensures all work is checked by a pharmacist.
- Conducts interpersonal communications with patients, visitors, physicians, and fellow employees in a courteous and friendly manner.
- Maintains own professional and specialized competency, including the following:
- Assumes responsibility for participating in experiences necessary to ensure appropriate skill development and training.
- Maintains and displays appropriate knowledge of developments in the field through continuing education, reviewing pertinent literature and/or by attending professional meetings.
- Attends and participates in all appropriate department programs.
- Remains informed by reading all department communications.
- Maintains comprehensive familiarity with appropriate department policies and procedures.
- Maintains all designated medical information confidential as per established protocols.
- Maintains work environment in a clean and orderly fashion.
- Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights.
- Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
- Performs all department required quality assurance responsibilities.
- Maintains proficiency to work in the following areas of the pharmacy: narcotic distribution, packaging and re-packaging, inventory maintenance and sterile manufacturing including small and large volume medications, chemotherapeutic agents, parenteral nutrition solutions and ophthalmological agents. Also in automated dispensing technology and maintenance.
- Maintains comprehensive familiarity with appropriate research regulations and policies.
OTHER DUTIES:
Performs other duties as needed.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
- Must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the MA Board of Pharmacy.
- Must also have national certification (CPT) from Pharmacy Tech Certification Board (PTCB) or Exam of Certified Pharmacy Techs (exCPT).
EXPERIENCE:
- Requires minimum of four years of related experience.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Requires excellent interpersonal skills, telephone communications skills and pharmaceutical calculation skills. Must be able perform at a high level in all aspects of outpatient pharmacy operations and must maintain competency in all areas of outpatient pharmacy.
Requirements for Inpatient:
Must be able to compound Pediatric IV, Chemo IV and must maintain competency in all areas of inpatient pharmacy.
Technicians will be required to complete the following prior to working in the IV room:
- IV Room Competency exam (minimum passing score of 90%).
- USP 797 Competency exam (minimum passing score of 85%).
- Hazardous Drug Competency exam (minimum 90%).
- Pediatric Competency exam (90%).
