Job Summary
The Surgical Tech-CVOR is responsible for providing technical support in the care and preparation of patients undergoing Cardiovascular surgical procedures. Works under the direct supervision of the Surgeon. Functions as an important member of the surgical team in the operating room and at times solo scrubs all levels of CVOR and trauma cases. Must be able to take call, including weekends.
Accountabilities
- Provides technical assistance to surgical staff in the preparation of patients for surgery and in the preparation of CVOR equipment, instruments, and supplies. Responsible for maintaining inventory control, Surgeons’ preferences, and instrumentation needs. (15%)
- Assists surgeon at the sterile field with routine and specialty surgical procedures. (15%)
- Utilizes data from surgical preference cards for the surgical procedure and surgeon. (15%)
- Maintains sterile field during surgical procedures. Adheres to accepted standards for the provision of safe patient care in the surgical environment. (15%)
- Demonstrates understanding of age-related characteristics and needs of patients served. (10%)
- Demonstrates respect for patient rights and acts as a patient advocate. (10%)
- Communicates with the surgical team to assist with coordination and provision of surgical patient care. (5%)
- Assists in the orientation of new team members. (5%)
- Complies with policies addressing safe working conditions; reports unsafe working conditions. (10%)
Minimum Requirements
- Successful completion of a Surgical Technology program or Surgical Technologist training in the U.S. Armed Forces.
- No previous experience required.
Required Certifications/Registrations/Licenses
CST - Surgical Technologist Certification with NBSTSA or NCCT certification accepted if ST was employed as a ST in S.C. prior to January 1, 2008, or completed a ST military training program.
In Lieu Of The Above Minimum Requirements
In lieu of the education requirement only, must be current with mandatory 15 hours annually of ST continuing education AND either have been employed as a ST in S.C. prior to Jan. 1, 2008, OR have completed a ST military training program. Team members employed in this job prior to July 1, 2020, without surgical tech certification that are grandfathered under South Carolina law are not required to obtain certification but are required to complete 15 hours annually of continuing ST education.
Other Required Skills
Prepares setup and scrubs new technology procedures such as (TVAR) Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, (LVAD) Left Ventricular Assist Device, Impella Implantation, Ablation Devices, Transmyocardio Laser, Cardio Assist Devices and Endovascular cases. Must have an understanding of the Heart Lung Machine and its function with the cardiovascular system in regard to cannulation of the patient - required.
