Job Description
QTAS MS Proteomics Internship Overview
Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.
This internship provides an opportunity to contribute to the Quantitative, Translational, and ADME Sciences (QTAS) MS proteomics sub-team that has a proven track record of providing molecular characterization of tissues, biofluids, and models at the proteome level. Our team has pushed the sensitivity boundaries over several orders of magnitude, enabling proteome analysis of minute samples such as laser-capture microdissection (LCMs) and ocular biofluids. The goal of this internship is adapting Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC)-Associated Peptide Proteomics (MAPPs) technology to our toolbox, which will further enhance our ability to support Development Sciences specific requests, particularly in immunogenicity risk assessment of biologics. The successful onboarding of MAPPs technology will significantly enhance AbbVie's ability to assess the immunogenicity risk of biotherapeutics. MAPPs can provide a more accurate and comprehensive assessment of immunogenicity risk, enabling faster decision-making and reducing the need for costly and time-consuming animal studies.
This internship will be based in Worcester, MA.
Key responsibilities include:
- Identify and optimize suitable MAPPs technologies that can be onboarded and developed internally.
- Collaborate with the preclinical safety team to fully understand the assay needs and limitations of their sample matrix.
- Plan and execute pilot and actual MAPPs studies to generate a list of MHC-II-associated peptides that may activate T cells in a tested donor, and report results to the preclinical safety team.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a PhD in Immunology, Oncology, Biochemistry, or other related field.
- Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.
- Proficiency in MS proteomics workflow: sample preparation, design, and execution.
- Broad knowledge of mass spectrometry instrumentation, including but not limited to operation and maintaining orbitraps and/or time-of-flight mass spectrometers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expected graduation date between December 2025 – July 2026.
- Exposure to the immunopeptidomics field, preferably in the context of immunogenicity.
- Extensive experience in designing and executing sensitive MAPPs or other global MS proteomics sample preparation protocols.
- Familiarity with cross-team collaborations and ability to clearly communicate advantages and challenges associated with sensitive sample preparation protocols.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills and a strong team spirit.
Benefits and Amenities
- Competitive pay.
- Relocation support for eligible students.
- Select wellness benefits and paid holiday / sick time.
- Access to state-of-the-art MS instrumentation and understanding its application for MS proteomics in a pharmaceutical industry context.
