Summary:
The Physician Assistant in Pediatric Neurosurgery works closely with our pediatric neurosurgeons, physician assistants, and the multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality, compassionate care to children with neurosurgical conditions. This role includes assisting in surgeries, managing pre- and post-operative care, conducting patient evaluations, and contributing to their ongoing care. The position also includes on-call responsibilities, requiring availability for urgent and emergency care during nights, weekends, and holidays.
Physician Assistant Responsibilities:
- Provides medical care, diagnostic, and therapeutic interventions to patients with complex, acute, and chronic health conditions.
- Assesses health status by obtaining relevant health and medical history.
- Performs a physical exam based upon the age and patient history as per the Supervisory Agreement in place with OSMB.
- Identifies significant health and medical risk factors.
- Orders, interprets, and evaluates laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies to assess patients' clinical problems and health care needs.
- Develops a diagnosis by analyzing and synthesizing collected data.
- Develops a treatment plan along with the patient and significant others as directed and reviewed by a physician.
- Performs diagnostic or therapeutic interventions consistent with certification, law, and Akron Children's Hospital privileges.
- May prescribe and monitor medications as allowed by prescriptive authority through Ohio Board of Medicine and hospital policy.
- Develops patient education plans.
- Collaborates with nursing, medical, and other healthcare team members regularly to ensure quality patient care.
- May serve as a clinical preceptor for PA students.
- Other duties as assigned.
Inpatient Responsibilities:
- Provides medical care to patients with complex acute, critical, and chronic health conditions, including the delivery of acute care services.
- Practices with a variety of specialty-based populations including neonatal, pediatric, and adult.
- Participates in quality monitoring through the review of records and treatment plans for patient outcomes on a bi-annual basis to assure quality care and per ORC requirements.
Outpatient Responsibilities:
- Emphasizes health promotion, disease prevention, and the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic health problems.
- Identifies patient/family needs for discharge, including education, equipment, home care, transportation, or referrals required.
- Writes prescriptions for patients within scope of practice.
- Communicates appropriately with the primary care physician.
- Selects and orders appropriate tests under the guidance of a physician.
- Writes orders in patient chart, cosigned by a physician as needed.
- Participates in emergency treatment and triages appropriately.
- Maintains confidentiality of all department and patient matters.
- Communicates with families providing written materials and videos when appropriate.
- Competently assists/performs treatments/procedures for patients on their service.
- Competently administers medications.
Other Information:
Master's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies preferred. Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program. Licensed as a Physician Assistant in the State of Ohio, current NCCPA (National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistant) certification. Must have a Supervision Agreement filed, current certificate to practice, and certificate to prescribe (or eligible) by the Ohio Board of Medicine. Must obtain credentialing as an active member of the medical staff and appropriate medical staff privileges. Current Health Care Provider BLS training is required. Individuals hired without an MS Degree and those hired without a certificate to prescribe (or CTP eligible) must actively pursue and obtain a MS degree/certificate to prescribe. Excellent critical thinking, self-motivation, and interpersonal communication skills are essential.
