Summary:
The Breast Nurse Specialist (BNS) is responsible for evaluation and assessment of patients in the Breast and Osteoporosis Center (BOC). The BNS navigates patients through the continuum of care including coordination between hospital departments, pre-procedure patient education and workup, communication with referring providers, assisting with breast biopsies and localizations, and post procedure evaluation, follow up, and education. The Breast Nurse Specialist is responsible for quality and performance improvement projects as well as staff education within the Breast and Osteoporosis Center. The Breast Nurse Specialist oversees the correlation of breast imaging, pathology, history and physical examination and is responsible for communicating committee recommendations to referring providers.
Responsibilities:
- Identifies, develops, and leads processes/projects to increase patient access, improve patient outcomes, or reduce cost of patient care.
- Effectively communicates between departments, with physicians, with patients, and staff within the unit.
- Assists in developing departmental policies that align with regulatory compliance.
- Assists in Accreditation processes for Annual, 3-, and 5-year cycles of accreditation for breast program.
- Performs all duties within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act and in accordance with the basic principles and guidelines of professional nursing.
- Acts as a resource within the department and to patients regarding expectations of breast procedures and care.
- Is responsible for compiling and dispersing Breast Correlation Committee data (pathology, imaging, history & physical) to committee members and maintaining records of committee recommendations.
- Screens referrals to the BOC and coordinates care for the patient along the breast cancer diagnostic pathway.
- Counsels patients regarding diagnostic workup and provides instruction on pre and post procedure care.
- Aids radiologists as part of the multidisciplinary care team with positioning, biopsy collection, and wound care for all breast procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Other Information:
- Certified Breast Care Nurse (CBCN) required or achieves within 2 years.

- 2+ years of relative work experience required. * 2 years relevant work experience and 5 years clinical experience.
