DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directs and schedules the performance of numerous tests both in the lab and in the field of a variety of construction materials and products such as soils, aggregates, and consumer products to ensure that materials tested conform to client and project specifications.
- Ensures validity of test results and that testing turnaround schedules are achieved.
- Trains and reviews coordinators’ and lab technicians’ work to ensure compliance with all testing and safety procedures.
- Performs limited personnel functions, including performance management feedback, mentoring, employee development, and reinforcing a positive work environment. Plans and schedules work for team members, ensuring the appropriate and effective distribution of assignments, labor, and equipment for efficient performance of duties. Reviews and approves timesheets and time off requests for accuracy and completeness.
- Adheres to corporate policies and procedures, Practice and Department procedures, and ensures consistent application and team member compliance.
- Develops, fosters, and maintains client relationships. Pursues repeat or follow-up work with current clients. Collaborates with Department and Practice leadership to respond to new business opportunities, including preparing materials testing proposals.
- Coordinates with Department leadership and Accounting regarding project invoicing and collections.
- Actively supports laboratory certifications/accreditations and renewals.
- Coordinates equipment maintenance and calibrations.
- Participates in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals.
- Complies with all safety policies, practices, and procedures.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Ten years’ experience in the construction materials testing field and five years’ experience in a lab management role.
- Extensive knowledge of AASHTO and ASTM procedures.
- Knowledge of how test results are determined, the ability to interpret them, and understanding of cause and effect when comparing.
- Knowledge of regulatory agencies’ and various municipalities’ requirements.
- English language skills: ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and the public.
- Mathematical skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to apply concepts to practical situations.
- Reasoning skills: ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- Proficient personal computer skills including electronic mail, record keeping, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, specifically Microsoft Office.
- Organizational skills: ability to prioritize, organize and delegate tasks and assignments; ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Remote connectivity device with data plan sufficient for company requirements, such as multi-factor authentication, time and mileage tracking, expense reimbursement, e-mail, and virtual communications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Moderate physical activity performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a primarily technical nature.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items, work with the fingers, and perceive attributes of objects and materials.
- Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods of time.
- Ability to stand and walk over uneven surfaces.
- Ability to occasionally bend, crouch or stoop.
- Ability to see clearly 20 feet or more; ability to identify and distinguish colors; ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point (peripheral vision); three-dimensional vision with ability to judge distances and spatial relationships (depth perception); ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to lift and move up to 10 pounds frequently, up to 25 pounds occasionally, and up to 50 pounds as needed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

WORK SCHEDULE
- Normal schedule Monday through Friday; occasional weekends.
- Variable work hours as projects dictate (occasional 10- to 12-hour days).
This position includes safety-sensitive job functions, and random screenings will be conducted in accordance with CEC’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy.
