Summary & Objective
The Respiratory Therapist provides respiratory services to patients under orders from the referring physician, enhancing the quality of the patient's life. The Respiratory Therapist will educate end users on patient-specific medical devices used in the CHI hospice care settings.
Essential Functions
- Perform a thorough assessment, evaluation, and documentation of the patient’s level of respiratory functioning in response to therapy, in accordance with their state’s practice act.
- Consult with physicians to develop treatment plans.
- Develop and implement an individualized treatment plan for each patient to promote optimal respiratory function.
- Deliver and assess response to ordered therapy per plan of care, monitoring, documenting, and communicating patient condition as appropriate.
- Provide peer-to-peer education and consultation to RN, RT, Physician, and other healthcare staff.
- Assess customer needs and assist with resolving issues related to medical device knowledge.
- Assist in the delivery of medical device-related in-service education.
Other Duties
- Participate in patient care for Broward and Dade County patients.
- Maintain equipment in a sanitary condition with appropriate supplies.
- Assist Leadership Team in gathering departmental statistics for Q.A. reports.
- Provide instruction regarding respiratory care and equipment to patients, staff, and volunteers as needed.
- Make decisions within the scope of respiratory care and make appropriate recommendations to the responsible physician.
- Serve as an education resource person on particular respiratory devices.
- Participate with the team in hurricane preparedness to ensure patients’ safety.
- Comply with standards related to safety and infection control.
- Maintain required licenses, certifications, and mandatory skill updates.
- Comply with all policies, local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibility
- May serve as an interim department leader depending on need.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and push/pull up to 250+ pounds, walk, climb stairs or ladders, and stand for extended periods of time.
Knowledge & Experience Requirements
- Clear and Active RCP license to practice in the state of Florida.
- Graduate of an accredited program for Respiratory Therapy.
- Registration or certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) (CRT minimum; RRT preferred).
- 1-3 years of experience in a Health Care Facility; hospice experience preferred.
- CPR certification.
- Knowledge of computer office/clinical software.
- Ability to read, write, and understand the English language.
