Job Description:
The Large Animal Hospital operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This person will provide technical veterinary support to faculty, house officers, and students throughout the large animal hospital. It is essential that this person has expertise in handling livestock and is able to provide instruction to veterinary students on proper and safe handling of these potentially dangerous large animals. To include support for emergency cases seen during and after hours. To include proper adherence to infection control protocols. Areas of patient care and responsibilities include but are not limited to isolation barn, resident herd, food animal, & ICU.
Job Responsibilities:
- 40% - Perform and teach/instruct house officers, clinicians and students on a variety of services (internal medicine, surgery, ICU). Setting appointments, admitting patients, triaging and responding to emergencies, routine and specialized procedures. Inpatient treatments and case management including hourly checks and treatments, procedure set up and clean up following. Basic care and maintenance of technical equipment such as endoscopes, ultrasound machines, ECG, oxygen tanks, etc. Maintain the large animal hospital in a constant state of readiness; aspects and the importance of proper biosecurity and infectious disease protocol.
- 40% - Perform teach/instruct house officers, clinicians and students. Professional interaction with clients and proper communication and the receiving of information. Monitoring patients throughout the hospital, maintaining professional medical records, keeping track and input of charges for equine inpatients and outpatients. Appropriate charting includes recording treatments, procedures, and communication in the medical record. Aid in generating estimates. Oversee procedures and treatments performed by veterinary students and ensure safety and accuracy.
- 20% - Cover weekend and holidays coverage with the other large animal technician staff. As a lead worker perform and manage any of these duties, as assigned by the supervisor or director of nursing – Coverage of requested leave, on call duties/daily management of coverage- work distribution. Orientation of students, technicians, and house officers. Equipment inventory, maintenance, service/relay special order items to purchaser, submit and follow up on internal work order submissions. Controlled drug management and audits.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree with 4 years of experience OR Associates degree in veterinary technology with 4 years experience; OR Certification as a vet tech or equivalent with 4 years experience; OR 7 Years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.
Specific experience with administrative duties.

Required to be capable of lifting 50+ pounds, standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching above the shoulder, reaching below the shoulder, vision near sight, vision far sight, climbing, crawling, twisting, pushing/pulling, grasping, and squatting.
