Primary Accountability:
The Lab Manager is responsible for ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements, developing standard operating procedures for lab operations, and acting as a liaison between the team of technicians. It will be the responsibility of the Lab Manager to oversee the workflow and monitor, direct, and coordinate all functions of Laboratory Services that are provided at Gove County Medical Center (GCMC) in accordance with facility policies and all applicable laws and regulations.
Major Duties:
- Be on site to provide direct supervision when high complexity testing is performed by any individuals qualified under CFR 493.1489 (b) (4) or review that work within 24 hours.
- Ensure that test and testing systems perform to acceptable levels of performance.
- Monitor test analysis and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
- Initiate and implement additional testing to be performed within the Laboratory as deemed appropriate.
- Be reasonably accessible to testing personnel when testing is performed and provide on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation to resolve technical problems in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Provide day-to-day supervision of high complexity test performance by testing personnel qualified under 493.1489 (Federal Register).
- Take necessary action when test systems deviate from the Laboratory’s established performance characteristics and ensure that patient test results are not reported until this is done.
- Have working knowledge in all phases of medical laboratory technology including chemistry, serology blood banking, hematology, urinalysis, phlebotomy, and bacteriology.
- Maintain accurate patient records.
- Preserve orderliness and cleanliness throughout the Laboratory.
- Follow established policies and procedures when test systems are not within the Laboratory’s defined acceptable levels of performance.
- Accurately document all quality assurance activities, instrumental or procedural calibrations or maintenance performed.
- Follow the established procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
- Effectively identify problems that may adversely affect test performance, test reporting, test results, and properly correct the problem or notify the necessary personnel.
- Effectively use the necessary skills for patient specimen collection, including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing, or preparation, transportation, and storage of specimens.
- Have working knowledge of reagent stability and storage.
- Demonstrate care and use of supplies and equipment.
- Show initiative in duties performed and be prompt in carrying out orders for tests and procedures.
- Show proficiency in all routine examinations.
- Assist with the training of office personnel in the areas of Quality Assurance requirements for the FDA and the Department of Health and Environment.
- Assess emergency situations and work quickly and efficiently.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment on matters of significance to the department.
- Maturity to manage employees and engage in effective hiring, disciplining, and termination.
- Play an active role in any contract negotiations or strategic planning regarding the Laboratory.
- Responsible for ensuring all shifts and call times are scheduled and covered.
- Ensuring compliance with all state and federal laws including HIPAA, discrimination, ADA, and ADEA.
Qualifications:
- Must have a BS degree or a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Medical Technologist (MT) license.
- Must have three (3) years of experience in high complexity testing.
Physical Demands:
- Eye/Hand, Eye/Foot, and Hand/Foot Coordination.
- Normal eyesight, with or without corrective lenses.
- Normal hearing, with or without hearing aids.
- Motor coordination and manual dexterity.
- The ability to bend, stoop, crawl, and kneel.
- The ability to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly.
Work Environment:
- Well-lit/well-ventilated work area; close visual work.
- Prolonged amount of sitting, standing, and walking throughout the day.
- Subject to frequent interruptions.
- May be exposed to infectious, contagious, and bloodborne diseases.
- Meet and talk with a wide variety of employees, visitors, and patients.
- Exposed to offensive odors or hazards of explosive gases.
- Exposure to unpleasant elements such as accidents, illnesses, and injuries.
- Able to work under emergency situations.
- Exposed to a variety of electro-mechanical hazards.
