The Supervising Veterinarian supports the day-to-day operations of the organization’s Veterinary Services. The Supervising Veterinarian manages the health of the Shelter population, the surgical program, and disease control protocols. The position serves as a key member of the Shelter staff. The schedule for the position is generally 5 days a week and includes a weekend day, evenings, and on-call requirements. Emergency hours may be implemented during emergencies. This position reports to the Director of Operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain and promote current best practices in animal sheltering in relation to programs, policy, and processes.
- Perform physical exams on animals upon intake and as needed, and diagnose and prescribe treatment for sick and injured animals in the shelter and in our public wellness clinic.
- Perform high-volume spay/neuter surgeries, and additional surgery as required on shelter and publicly owned animals. Additional surgeries may include, but are not limited to dentistry, enucleations, exploratory laparotomies, orthopedics, tumor removal, amputations, etc.
- Perform necropsy exams as well as provide comprehensive documentation, recommendations, or interpretations regarding findings when requested.
- When appropriate, evaluate, make recommendations for, and perform humane euthanasia of suffering or unhealthy animals according to HSVB policies and protocols.
- Schedule and lead medical rounds.
- Manage other veterinarians, clinic technicians and assistants, and volunteers to ensure compliance with medical protocols and treatments, disease control standards, safety and personnel policies and procedures.
- Maintain comprehensive computerized medical records on Chameleon and Avimark for medical management and surveillance of illness within the shelter.
- Participate with HSVB-sponsored veterinary clinics and programs, e.g., low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination of public animals and free roaming cats.
- Adhere to a comprehensive health care program with the following components – environmental sanitation, record keeping, disease surveillance, physical examinations, vaccination, parasite control, disease testing, disease treatment, surgery, nutrition, outbreak response, and environmental enrichment for animals in the shelter and in foster homes.
- Work collaboratively with the Shelter Manager and other departments to ensure positive communication and an efficient work environment.
- Educate staff and volunteers regarding animal disease, and other topics as needed.
- Create standard operating procedures and protocols for veterinary treatment and disease control.
- Support and mentor visiting students and/or interns as required.
- Responsible for coverage of the on-call services of the department. Provides coverage for and/or makes arrangements for coverage for all PTO.
- Ensure staff follows all safety guidelines to ensure a safe work environment.
- Ensure adequate inventory and monitoring of supplies, medications and all drugs, including DEA-regulated substances.
- Collaborate on developing the organization’s budget planning and regularly track and report upon progress toward goals. Provide financial analysis, ensure accuracy of invoices and statements surrounding medical care.
- Attend HSVB functions and events as a member of the leadership team and ambassador for the agency; create and maintain positive working relationships with local veterinarians and other stakeholders.
Minimum Job Qualifications:
- DVM degree from an accredited university with a Florida veterinary license or ability to obtain a Florida license within 30 days.
- Must embrace open admission sheltering philosophy.
- Experience in high quality/high volume surgical sterilization.
- Qualified and eligible to obtain and retain DEA license.
- Must provide proof of, and maintain, Professional Liability Insurance.
- Minimum of one year supervisory experience.
- Available to work flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Experience with wildlife, exotics and barnyard animals a plus.
- Strong customer service orientation and effectiveness in interacting with people from different backgrounds.
Salary: $120,000-140,000 depending on skills, experience, and qualifications – $2,000 reimbursement provided annually for CE.
