TRIO SSS Peer Specialists assist the TRIO SSS team in increasing the access and success of new Salt Lake Community College students. At SLCC, TRIO Peer Specialists play a critical role for the College helping students to feel welcome and successful on campus life. All TRIO Peer Specialists develop leadership and professional skills while employed, and benefit from being part of a caring team environment that fosters their personal and academic growth. Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Participate as a team member of the TRIO department by:
- Presenting information about TRIO to large and small groups of students during the academic year.
- Informing TRIO students and their families of campus resources and services.
- Leading tours of the Redwood campus for students, families, and other guests.
- Answering questions and directing students in person, via email, and over the phone.
- Participating in event planning and execution of duties with diligence and excellent customer service practices.
- Participating in other institutional activities and duties as assigned.
- Motivate and encourage TRIO students.
- Create a welcoming environment for TRIO students and their families.
- Articulate the purpose of SLCC’s general education classes and teach students how to register for these classes.
- Feel comfortable using the SLCC Catalog and DegreeWorks platforms.
- Be punctual and dependable.
- Participate in ongoing professional development sessions.
- Guide new students through the TRIO SSS application online.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma/GED
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong public speaking skills.
- Professionalism in manner and appearance.
- Bilingual or multilingual ability.
- Familiarity or involvement with SLCC services, resources, or student organizations.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Communicate effectively (in writing and verbally) with a wide range of individuals.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
- Present in front of large audiences as well as provide one-on-one consultations.
- Work collaboratively with others in the TRIO team, as well as our campus and community partners.
- Organize, process and disseminate large amounts of information accurately.
- Learn the requirements of SLCC services, major prerequisites, programs and degree options, as well as college resources and procedures (e.g., application, registration, placement, orientation, etc.).
- Work well under pressure and function independently with integrity under minimal supervision.
- Work a flexible schedule which may include mornings, evenings, and weekends.
- Utilize basic computer operating systems (e.g., Microsoft Office Word, Publisher, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and SLCC’s student information system (i.e., Banner).
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.

This position will work 10-20 hours a week, not to exceed 125 hours in a month.

Work-study is awarded to SLCC students through the Federal College Work-Study program, which requires establishing financial need through the FAFSA application from the Financial Aid Office. If you do not have work-study awarded to you, you will not be eligible for work under work-study positions.
